Hi I believe Talwrn, Vron and Plas Power were all nearby but no doubt someone with more local knowledge will be able to confirm this. Plas Power Colliery and Llidiart Fanny are listed with their locations, on the Coedpoeth locations board. This BBC link has some info on the history of the local pits. www.bbc.co.uk/wales/northeast/sites/wrexham/pages/coedpoeth1.shtmlVron Colliery:Location,Tanyfron Sunk:circa 1806 Closed:1943 The colliery was sunk around 1806 and experienced financial problems for a sustained period before it was purchased by the Broughton and Plas Power Coal Company for use as a pumping shaft. The coal pillars which supported the shafts were worked form Offa's Dyke level and operations here ceased in 1943 Plas Power Colliery :Location, Southsea Sunk:1875 The sinking of Plas Power Colliery commenced in 1875 with the first coal being wound in 1977. Even during the early phase of production at Plas Power, it was always considered a modern pit as its various owners were pioneers in the use of electricity underground. As well as this, the central generating system also provided electricity to Gatewen and Vron collieries. At its peak the colliery employed 1,099 men. In 1885 miners at Plas Power mobbed and drove away Irish workers at the colliery and the following year saw more riots and dispute over industrial relations.
This link also looks interesting and informative www.welshcoalmines.co.uk/North/westminster.htmHope this helps, Eluned

Hi, Although Llidiart Fanny is on the very southern end of Coedpoeth at the bottom of the Talwrn Rd. I would suggest Vron was nearest with Plas Power a very close second--My guesstimate would be about a mile to either of these from Coedpoeth, Sorry I do not know the exact location of Talwrn Colliery but if it was the one near 5 Crosses this again would be about a bare mile away. Please bear in mind this is only an opinion and I will probably be shot down in flames. Good Luck Tom

Talwrn Colliery was on the right of Talwrn Road, if you were coming up from Southsea, opposite the top of Castle Rd so quite close to Llidiart Fanny. Pentre'r fron was another one off the Talwrn.

Hi all, Top Talwrn colliery was situated (if my memory serves me right) between the end of Brynhyfryd estate and 3/4 Talwrn Rd - there are bungalows built on the land now and it backs onto Greengate Farm Estate which was built in the 70/80s. There were mounds on this land which I assume were the remains of the colliery spoil tips. I can vaguely remember there being a pit head there and being warned by my nan to be careful when I played at (the now demolished ) Joys cottage which stood on the Talwrn Rd side of the land because there were old mine workings there. Maybe an old map would prove where these collieries were - the ones I found so far look too small when viewed on a computer?
