An unknown group but I think one of the younger men is Rowland Roberts b 1892. I don't know whether the other men are part of the Roberts family. There were 6 brothers altogether. Robert Roberts was born in 1873 so 41 by 1914.If he was a Territorial like his brother John Henry then maybe he would have been mobilised. William b 1878 died during the war and probably not in the Army. Isaac b 1881/Frederick George 1886.Some were miners like their father I need to do some work on medals I hope that someone else might recognise a face-or the house perhaps Sue Attachments:

Their uniforms would indicate that they were in the artillery. www.thegarrison.org.uk/history/index.phpAn excellent site for WW1 queries and information is the Long long trail. You are able to see orders of battle and unit histories. I have received some wonderful information from people on their forum too. www.1914-1918.net/

My cousin found 3 letters from our grandfather John Aldred to our grandmother Mary Jane Roberts[Polly] born 1875 at Bersham amongst some papers that her father had put aside. She doesn't remember ever seeing them before. They seem to have all been written in 1917 beginning with one in Feb when his Regiment-The Manchester Regiment I believe- had only just arrived. It was bitterly cold weather. The second one is March 15th.He has tried to locate the grave of our great uncle John Henry Roberts-her brother-Co Sergeant Major of B Coy 4th Welch Fusiliers [Territorials] who was killed in July 1915.The graveyard had been shelled by the Germans. He refers to having heard from Rolant Roberts-the youngest brother of Mary Jane and John Henry Roberts by PostCard where it was.Rolant was present when he was shot. It is probably best to print the letters to read them. Sue Attachments:

Yesterday, quite by chance, I found a new website about WW1.It also includes links to sections on War Graves cemeteries where ''shot at dawn'' and VC's are buried. It is www.ww1cemeteries.com People can also submit photos and obits of their fallen men.I think that it would be nice to add one for Henry John Roberts although I don't yet have a photo. The one photo of his Sergeants Mess doesn't indicate which is him! I still haven't found any family descendents but will try to find a newspaper obit for him. He was left buried in Cambrin Churchyard Extension. It has a lovely church overlooking it. So my Grandfather was there for some time.Possibly in the Chateau grounds which he mentions-as does the website. You can also look that up on www.CWGC.orgCan anyone find me a link for a newspaper obit of Co.Sgt Major John Henry Roberts died 19th July 1915 please. Hi List I recently went onto the Royal Welch Fusiliers Forum and submitted some of our family photos. www.rwf-forum.co.uk once on the Home page click the box named Forum. Then scroll down to below the photos and click onto Research. You will find my messages on John Henry Roberts. Sadly they have not divided it all up into areas of interest ie-WW1, WW2, other postings but it is all muddled up.To view photos you will need to sub to the site With reference to a request by me for info on the 4th Battalion Territorials [Denbighshire] I have had the following reply from''baconwallah''.He is at present compiling an index of the 4th Batt and is asking me to help with the research when he Forwards it to me. If anyone has family members to add to the names then that could be a big help.Anyone who can give me a list of fallen in the 4th Batt from war memorials, or can point me towards other websites will be welcomed with great relief! ''Look what a fine mess I have got myself into'' !![to paraphrase Abbot and Costello-- or was it Laurel and Hardy??] ;D The research could be cross referenced to both sites if admin are happy with that. Sue Thanks for the e-mail address, Sue. As soon as the muster roll is finished, I'll send you a copy Some cross referencing to be done still; will take about a week I think.
Please publish as much as you can on the Forum. There is little information on 4/RWF at the moment and everything is welcome. You might become our resident 4/RWF expert...
If you want to know more about 4/RWF enlistment dates and numbers, the best way to find out will be to check Ancestry for service or pension records of the men on the muster roll. Other researchers would be very thankful for the help! I only wish I had time to do it myself, but the 1/RWF book keeps me fully occupied for the time being.
John

Further to my last message I thought some of you might be interested to read this which I found on line
Sue
P S You don't have to pay to sub to the Fusiliers forum but they do ask for donations where possible.
World War One 1914-1918
During the Great War the Regiment experienced an incredible expansion. Having started the war in 1914 with seven battalions—two Regular, one Special Reserve and four Territorial Force—another thirty-three bore the Royal Welch Fusiliers’ title before it ended. Each of the Territorial battalions raised Second and Third Line units known as the 2/4th, 3/4th, 2/5th etc. Although they had no obligation to do so, such was the enthusiasm of the “Terriers” for the war in its early days that the majority signed up for overseas service. The 4th (Denbighshire) Battalion (TF) was one of the few Territorial units ready for immediate service overseas at the outbreak of war. It arrived in France on 5th November 1914 and, assigned to 1st Division it spent the winter in trenches at Festubert. In May 1915 the 4th took part in the unsuccessful assault on Aubers Ridge and suffered heavily. In September 1915 the Battalion was transferred to 47th (London) Division and a new role as Pioneers, due no doubt to the large number of miners in its ranks. It spent the remainder of the war digging and repairing trenches, roads and tramway lines, often in the Front Line and in hazardous situations.

I thought that I would let you all know that the Royal Welch Fusiliers website is now easier to research. I plucked up courage and suggested that they divide messages into different sections.Within 36 hours they had done it!! So now you can go on the forum and access threads about ww1 or ww2 seperately. www.rwf-forum.co.ukHappy Hunting and do add more info about your families to the threads. Sue

I am still trying to find descendants of Jane Elizabeth OWEN born at 5 Crosses.
She married my great uncle John henry Roberts and they had 3 children William Owen Roberts in 1906/Elizabeth 1908 and Freda early in 1914.Freda married a John Deadman in Sussex. There should be some children or descendants
On August 11th 1914 he was among the first to embark for France as he was part of the 4th Batt Royal Welch Fusiliers-a Territorial Battalion. The 100th anniversary of his death occurs on July 15th. He will be remembered on the RWF Forum site but a photo or news of his descendants would be even better.
We have lots of photos of the Roberts family but no names attached. Any that you have would be great.
Hope that you can help in some way
Thanks Sue

There is a PRIVATE tree on Ancestry . When you enter the marriage in 1935 of John Deadman and Freda Roberts - it is the only one that seems to have it as a match. The name shown is Kathleen Rhoda May Deadman. Birth: 1911 - Kent
Perhaps it may be worth contacting the tree owner.

Thank you for your help with this family. I have contacted the owner of the Private Tree but they only have one source so am not too hopeful of them having any further info.
Is there a Wrexham area local paper that you could suggest that I could send a message to?
Also any local newspaper archives for 1915 that might tell us more? Not on Britishnewspapers yet.

Thank you annedw for your help. I had also obtained the soldiers effects details.
I was hoping that a local paper N Wales might have had details of John Henry Roberts death and maybe a photo. The Manchester ones were quite good at that. They must have had staff who approached the families when the lists of fallen, wounded and pow's came out, but also some families informed the papers.
My grandmother put a Family notice in the Manchester Courier about her brothers death.
I have had a reply from the Tree holder but she doesn't seem to know about our couple.
I will keep trying Many thanks
Sue

That would be very kind if you have the time
This is what I have found so far. John Deadman and Freda Roberts married in 1935 and Peter J was born later that year. They might also have had Derrick S born in Market Harborough in Dec q 1938 and Diane C born in Mar q 1941 in Doncaster. In both cases the mother was Roberts and I can find no other marriages that would fit. I can find nothing more about Derrick Deadman. A Diane C Deadman married Trevor J Ekins in 1963 in Eastbourne. I cannot find any children or other records for that marriage. But this seems to fit with the marriage of John Deadman and Freda Roberts. Perhaps they emigrated.
Freda Deadman died in 1997 in Eastbourne aged 82.The last surviving Roberts cousin, Gwen, died 2 years ago in her 90's and said that she had been in touch with Freda at one time-but not for some years .Sadly she didn't tell us any more about this family. They would have been brought up close to each other in Coedpoeth although about 8 years apart in age. I cannot identify the death, or maybe disappearance, of John Deadman
John Henry Roberts and my grandmother were siblings-all 10 children were born at Coedpoeth near Wrexham, North Wales.
I don't know John Deadmans place or dob .There are several possible men. Freda was born in 1914.They married in Eastbourne-- where other Deadmans lived.
The Tree owner on Ancestry has told me that this John Deadman is not part of her family. Sue

Hi, I think you can rule Derrick S Deadman out. There was a marriage in 1918 of a Sydney A Deadman and a Fanny Roberts in Uppingham not far from the Leicestershire border. A Derek Sydney Deadman born 2 September 1938 died in 1998 in Leicestershire and there are 2 marriages records for a Derek S Deadman in Market Harborough in 1960 and 1981. Given the Sydney link and Market Harborough link, I think it is safe to assume that Derrick changed to Derek between 1938 and 1960. The Eastbourne connection for Diane C Deadman suggests that this could be a sister of Peter. Hope this helps, Nellie

Nellie, Thank you for finding all that for me. It didn't come up on Freebmd when I searched. I should have tried Ancestry.
It would be really nice if I could find descendants of William Owen Roberts 1906 and Elizabeth 1908.Perhaps they might even still live in N Wales.
Could someone suggest to me the most widely read local newspapers to Coedpoeth and I will try sending a letter to be included very soon.
Sue

31 July 1915 page 7 I`ve had to reduce the image file size. If you want the originals then send me your email address in a private message. There was no photo. He went to the Salem Chapel , same as my family. There was a set of photos of soldiers that went to Salem. Somebody local to Wrexham saved it when the Chapel closed, but I have no idea where it is. It was in a frame . Attachments:
