Ago, Perhaps you should include their individual trades : Example Sgt. Pilot, F/Sgt Air gunner etc. Also I think you should included that they crashed in the area or near to where you place the plaque.

Hi Ago, I have just been chatting to Fred Edwards the son of George who went to the actual crash. A very basic way of identifying the exact crash area as far as he is aware would be to draw a triangle between Gwern To Bach, Gwern Hall and Pen y Nant and the crash site would be somewhere in the middle. Have you identified Gwern to Bach yet? I went there last week and as it is occupied I think you would need to make a request to place the plaque anywhere on their property as a gesture of goodwill, manners politeness whatever, but I am sure they would agree. Just as a note of interest Fred's wife has a brooch made from the perspex of this plane in the shape of an aeroplane made by someone in the village at the time. Good luck with your very worthy project. Regards Tom

hello all, regarding the memorial, have tried to get in touch with the land owner but to no avail, apparently he's a very busy man says a neighbor, who remembers gypsies removing what he describes as the engine, less than 6 years ago,if that's true then no prizes where that ended up,also on the new holt road leading to wrexham industrial site, work was delayed as a ww2 aircraft crash site was uncovered, this is not surprising as borras airfield was not far away is this true?,i remember a tale of a Bristol beau fighter crashing into a lake or small pool not far from airstrip.

Ago. For your information : Reference crash of Bristol Beaufighter, RAF Wrexham. This is recorded by Clwyd-Powys Archaeological Trust who carried out survey of the land surrounding the present quarry on behalf Tarmac Ltd in 2005. They found 3 crash sites 1 at map reference SJ 36235340 which is Brick Kiln Field, 2 at map ref. SJ35955330 and 3 at 36055325. At sites 2 and 3 there is no evidence of wreakage. Site 1 however is the site of the crashed Beaufighter Mk11F, T3414 Code C-J which crashed into the pond. Wreakage is still thought to be on site and over the years ammunition has been recovered from the site. There are no reports of fatalities in the crash. It is likely that the pond was formed by the extraction of the clay for the manufacture of bricks hence the name Brick Fields, so it must have been a fair sized pond more like a small lake.

Ago More information on the Beaufighter it was from 96 Squadron night fighters, who were based at RAF Wrexham from 21.10.41 to 20.10.42. The Beaufighter was taken on strength and used from May 42 to June 1943. So the accident must have taken place between May 42 and October 1942. Also found details possible of one of the other accidents mentioned in the report. Accident was on 27 July 1944 at 0119 hours when a Halifax Mk2 BB221 from number 1656 Conversion Unit at 20,000 feet suffered engine failure of it's port outter engine cut out and the port inner caught fire. An emergency landing was made at RAF Wrexham, approach spped was 130 knots and the aircraft put down half way along the short runway (1,100 yards). As a result the aircraft overshot bthe runway and dropped 20 feet onto the golf course and caught fire. All the crew escaped without injury. They were F/L. Raymond Maurice Crowther, DFC., J26093, pilot, Sergeants : R.F. Wilshire 1850371 Flight Engineer, W. Thorpe 1582893 Bomb Aimer, N.G. Prescott 1587098 Wireless Operator, H.L. Basson 1676349 Navigator, J.R. Scarfe R213922 RCAF, Mid Upper Gunner, and B. Rink R213515, RCAF, Rear Gunner.

Hi Ago, paid a visit to the field opposite Borras Hall Road, the digger has gone, however, unable to get to the field as they have closed thatsection of the old road for the moment and there was no where to park in the area. Will try again once the new by pass is open fully
