Looks like- The bathing ladies testing temperature in water.
Why didn`t people put their names , dates of birth and adresses in Photo Albums, I suppose we`re all guilty of that.

It might break your heart but maybe take the photos out of the album and look at the backs. Also scanning might improve them. I had to demolish an album and scrape off the backs of the photos to gain any clues. They were stuck into the album rather firmly.I tore them out, then scanned them, then held over kettle steam to soften the glue and carefully scraped with a small kitchen knife. They might curl with the steam but in fact mine were OK. Scan first in case you damage them. Steam one or 2 at a time. Quite a few had inscriptions or were postcards. Not such a nice album as this.Your pics might come out more easily as they are placed inside 2 pages
The young Guardsman might be Welsh Guards ? as his buttons appear to be in 3's. Grenadiers were equally spaced[my father] Coldstreams, Welsh and Scots have different spacings.
The soldier might be WW1 and the men on firing range might have been at a Territorial range perhaps Sue .

Also it seems possible that the poor lady in the bed outside might be at a TB Sanitorium.Fresh air was supposed to help. Sue

Looking at the backs of photos is always very useful in dating photos, these are already dated though, and to aid identification.

"I don't like the sound of steaming the photos, it sounds rather severe."
I did about 50 like this and none of them suffered.Just the gentle steam coming out of the kettle spout was enough to soften the glue.I didn't really tear them out of the album but eased them out with as little backing paper as possible then scanned, steamed and scraped the backs gently. I uncovered postage stamps and could thus date and place where they had been posted from. I loved the ones that said "I will come for tea this afternoon !!"
It might be worth sending some photos and clues like the initials to a national newspaper, one local to where you bought the album, or one of the Family History mags.
OR take a guess at the age of RWG and look for a suitable birth in that time frame on freeBMD Sue

I found that hotel as well, and I would say it`s the same one, on the shore of Windermere. There are other old pics of it on Google Images, and it looks the same. Old England Hotel , Bowness, Windermere. I would say this family were quite well off.

good find annedw,my money was on you, here's another 2 that just fell off the album, you know it's better than finding gold when you are the first one to see the writing in less than 100 years, like when i found a strand of human hair ,and finger prints, and just a hint of scent, anyway here they are, just another sip of j.d.
