Ago, Have been doing a little research and found reference to another crash on Ruabon Mountain on the 3.7.41. Spitfire K9895 flown by a Sgt A.J. Young RAFVR., 57 OTU out of Hawarden, who reportedly survived the crash. However, Sgt Young is recorded to having died in a flying accident in the Wrexham area on the 16.6.1941. Clearly the records are incorrect at some point. Have you come across any reference to this crash. I have cross referenced Sgt. Young in the Commonwealth Graves Records and this shows him having died on the 16.6.941 and having been buried in Hull, his home town

AGo Reference my last message re Sgt Young. Have just found 57OTU., log January to June 1941 which records Sgt. A.J. Young serial number 1003992 having been killed in a flying accindent whilst training in the Wrexham area on 16.6.1941. The evidence would indicate that he crashed into Ruabon mountain on the 16.6.1941., perhaps the wreakage was found on the 3.7.1941. Will try looking up records of 34th Maintenance Unit, which was responsible for aircraft recovery in that area.

Ago Further research into Spitfire K9895 and Sgt Young. K9895 piloted by Sgt Young was damaged on landing at Sealand ( Landing Gear was unlocked ) on 12.5.1941. The aircraft was repaired but crashed on the 20.7.1941 when in collission with Spitfire K9821 and crashed Brookside Farm Rossett. K9895 was piloted at the time by Sgt. R.J. Kempling R.C.A.F. ( Killed)

Ago Re last message incomplete system would not let me finish. Spitfire K9821 was flown by Flt. Sgt Beaton Ian Ronald Aird R.C.A.F. (killed) Both pilots are recorded as having been buried at Hawarden. St Deiniol Church Yard. ( Ref. CWGC. ) Information re crash obtained from "Wings Across the Boarder) Spitfire K9895 recorded as being struck off charge 6.8.41. So that just leaves the question(s) of what aircraft was Sgt Young flying when he was killed and where in the Wrexham area.

Ago Have found reference which supports the report of Spitfires K9895 and K9821 colliding whilst practising formation flying. ( www.RCAF.com/Whelan ) James Henry "Jimay" Whelan a RCAF ace records in his log that he was flying in formation with K9895 and K9821 when they collided. From this I assume all 3 aircraft were on the strength of 57 OTU at the time

Ago Reference Spitfire K9895 and Sgt A.J. Young RAFVR., Have been doing a little further research and there in my mind is little doubt that he was not flying Spitfire K9885 when it collided with K9821 over Rossett. However, Sgt. Youing certainly died in a air crash in the Wrexham area on or about the 16.6.1941. It would appear that there is an unaccounted aircraft and crash site in the area.

Ago Records of 57 OTU for June record the death of Sgt Young in a flying accident on the 16th June in the Wrexham area. Unfortunately the log does not record type of aircraft or map reference of crash site.

Hi Ago. With regard to Sgt. Young, believe I have found the Spitfire he was flying and site of crash. Page 15 Spitfire Aircraft Production records that Spitfire X4601 Mark 1A delivered to 57 OTU., on 2/5/1941. This aircraft swerved on take off to avoid workmen and hit crane and overturned 16th June 1941. The day that Sgt Young is reported to have been killed in a flying accident Wrexham area. I am assuming that he was taking off from 57's airfield at Hawarden as there are no records of a crash involving a Spitfire taking off from RAF Wrexham

Ago. Try looking at the Flap Valve assembly. They could be the Header Ring and Packing Ring which fit into each other

Hello,
A newbie here I am afraid but very interested in the mentions of the loss of Martinet HP227 of No.41 OTU Hawarden. As you know the pilot Flt / Sgt JAROSZ, Wlodzimierz. (780867) was killed in the incident but I would be more than interested in any additional information on this incident or photos to the crash location as it is today.
Kind regards,
Tim (Targettug)

Targettug, Flight Sgt. Wloozimierz Jarosz Born 24/2/1915 in Rudki Lwowskie, buried Hawarden Cemetery. Had flown to RAF Radnal to deliver a passenger, whilst returning to RAF Hawarden, (solo) flying in cloud with weather conditions becoming worse struck ridge of Ruabon mountain. Reports give the crash location as 5 miles west south west of Wrexham Police Station. (That is the old police station not the site of the new one) Also Note that in some reports the aircraft has been reported as a Miles Master. Both aircraft types were on the strength of 41 OTU at the time of the accident being used for target towing duties.

Targettug Try this address for further information : The Ministery of Defence, Air Historical Branch, 3-5 Great Scotland Yard, London SW1A 2H3. Also if you are in the area I recommend a visit to Sleap Aerodrome, Harmer Hill Shropshire SY4 3HE. This a former RAF ww2 air field and now houses the Shropshire Flying Club, but also Wartime Aircraft Recovery Group. Admission is free, but unlike the air field is only open Saturday and Sunday between 1000 and 1700 hrs. They have some parts from crashed Martinets, also the staff are very helpful
