Ago. Been going back over the thread. With reference to Hurricane V7001 which crashed Ruabon Mountain 29.1.1942. Have found reference to it on web site of A.T.A. Casualties - RAF Lichfield Association. The pilot was S/O John Percival Collins and was ferrying the aircraft from LLanworth to Dumfries when he encountered snow. They give the crash location as Pen y Cae, the aircraft came from the pool of 59 O.T.U's aircraft.

hello piercepierce, yes that's correct have found an aerial mast ether belonging to the hurricane or aircraft de Havilland vampire that crashed near to that area on 07.11.1951, but cant for the life of me find any information on the name of the pilot, locals remember parts of aircraft being carried down into pen-y-cae and loaded onto a lorry, all I have is pilot returning to valley, lost R/T contact and flew into ruabon mountain,

Ago Do not know how much information you hold on the Vampire, so sorry if I am doubling up. The Vampire was version DH 100 English Electric Fighter bomber mark V number WA305. Taken on into service by Number 202 Advanced Flying School RAF Valley on the 1.2.1951 and written off on the 7.11.1951 when it struck Ruabon mountain because of low cloud. This crash appears to have been non fatal with the pilot surviving as like you I cannot find any mention of him. I will try the aircraft recovery units one of which I think was based at RAF Hawarden / Sealand.

hello pierce, just had a look in fallen eagles and aviation safety network, has both pilots as fatal, will have to look again when the weather gets better rough areas up there not getting any younger, had a word with local farmer who informed me that an aircraft also crashed just between newtown village and pen y cae reservoir, (newtown was demolished long ago) this one is not even mentioned only a small cross on my old make shift map,

Ago, Like you having problems with this crash. Have tried casualty lists, number 202 advance flying school logs with no result, having difficult with the RAF Salvage and Recovery Records, tried local burial registers for the Wrexham area with no result. Do you know who recovered the aircraft remains, was it the RAF., or a local company. I know that during WW2., that local haulage companies were used and that may have extended into the 1950's. I have found 3 salvage companies who were established in the 1950's in PenyCae and certainly there were local haulage firms who they could have used. Tried Police incident records but hit a brick wall. There is no doubt that Vampire WA305 crashed on Ruabon Mountain. I am open to any ideas on a way to progress this. Know that you work away so I am quite happy to pursue this on your behalf Cheers Pierce

Ago, Also from the records it would appear that RAF mountain rescue services were not called out so that would appear that I could not find a reference. However, why cannot we find a reference to the pilot ?

Ago Just a thought this was an Advanced Flying School could be possible that the pilot was not R.A.F., but an Empire pilot in training and if so I suspect that his death would not be recorded on R.A.F., records just a thought.

hello matty, fantastic photos and yes you are right there are no visible pieces lying around any more, a mate of mine used to go shooting on them mores in the early 90's with the game keeper, and said that he had a lot of aircraft items in his barn, they where cleared for safety reasons not for keeping and now long gone, although some may have been taken and stored in someone's garage or shed.i myself have taken some items home only to clean and find prefix numbers and inspectors stamp and then returned, like spitfire is 300. Lancaster 638. DE havaland DH. anson 652a,and so on,i have found the vampire crashed on the 7/11/51 and this is the longest stretch of carnage that i have seen, it was days before it was found, the pilot who to this day has not been identified say that he must have lay there for days before he died, again in very bad weather and snow blizzards. thank you for your photos of the hurricane shouldn't take me long to find it,going to send you a PM.

Ago, Not 100% sure but I think they are of German origin. The K is for the German factory Kalsruhe, the SP255 is an inspection mark ( SP = Spandau ) June 1918 is the date of manufacture, the 15 and 11GA I am not sure of at the moment but will follow that up.

Ago, what will help is if you measure the diameter, that will give you a clue as to the calibre of the weapon.

Ado, could you take the measurement across the base of the shell casing. That will give a better and more accurate measurement. Sorry my mistake should have been more specific. Cheers
