It was Bristol Beaufighter TF. Mk10 being ferried from the Bristol factory at Weston-Super-Mare to R.A.F., Kirkbride in Cumbria, when it dived into the ground. Cause was recorded as pilot having lost control in low cloud whilst flying on instruments. Flight Sergeant Sheperd was assigned to Number 2 Ferry Pilot School. On the same day a Miles Master HP227 from 41 OTU., crashed on the other side of the mountain whilst flying from R.A.F., Radnel to R.A.F., Hawarden killing Flight Sergeant Jarosz

Hi Ago, Yes some reports state that it was a Miles Master and others a Mikes Martinet which was also used for training and for towing operations. Both types were on the strength 41OTU, though I believe the Martinet only entered service late 1942.

hello pierce, yes had this proplem, what you do is first click on GDIDS then british cassini grid, from mid wales to north wales comes under VJ the O/S MAPS have us under SJ (as you know)then you put your refrence number in starting with VJ,(you must have old army M/R numbers) for bristol beaufighter i have m/r 700700 put in VJ for sj so it's VJ 700 700, to see if you have the right m/r numbers let me know where this takes you VJ 820717, it's a well documented crash(r.i.p.)then go to satalite map(scroll down)have found MUSTANG andOXFORD,good luck.

ago Many thanks , no the fun is the research, occasionally one needs pointing in the right direction as per the Grids conversion site. That was great, saved me many hours of maths work which even then I would not have been sure whether the location was correct. Good luck on research and I hope you locate those missing aircraft.

ago. Have have been looking at your missing Spitfire X4167, 57 OTU, I have found a reference on the following web site www.spitfires.ukf.net/p001.htm that it descend through cloud and hit Ruabon Moutain. At the time it was flying in formation with Spitfire K9892 from 57 OTU. K9892 also crashed killing the pilot. Just thinking flying together both crash sites may not be that much apart. One may lead to the other.

ago. Had any luck in your search for Spitfire X4167. The weather has not been the best for searching in that particular area. I have some information with regards to RAF Recovery Teams but the records kept mainly did not give map references only the general area. Also some recovery work was contracted out to local civilian firms and they did not keep records as far as I can find. There was also the practice of burying wreckage that could not be recovered or was not worth the effort.

Good to hear from you. Well having found one the other should be not far away. However, both you and I know that if they were say 30 feet from each other then the crash site could been a long way away. Unfortuneately cannot find any reference to the formation they were flying when they crashed. Though since my last post I have visited the Shgropshire Air Recovery Unit based at Sleap Airfield.. Well worth a vist but unfortunately although a number of crashes involve aircraft from the same units/Sqds as those in the Wrexham area they have only recovered those from the Shropshire area.
