Could you let us know what books there are with information about Minera and Coedpoeth? I see that the resident historian has written some-any details would be great,Ros

I would be interested to find out is my great grandfather David Wilson Pugh/Price is mentioned in the Pubs and Inquests. He was an innkeeper at Queens Head Pub sometime in the 1890's to 1901 when he passed away. The reason for the PUGH/PRICE is on the census information for 1861 to 1901 they went by the name Price and for birth, marriage and death certificates they went by the name Pugh. I have no idea why.

Hello Barb,
Taken from Pubs & Inquests by JC Davies.... QUEENS HEAD, SMELT, COEDPOETH. This building still stands in the Smelt at the top of Old Smelt Road. The tenant in 1871 was Jane Parry. In 1892 David Price was landlord and in 1909 the licence was held by J.Kelly.
May well have a mention within the business directories on the coedpoeth section of the minerahistory.com web site. [ftp]http://www.coedpoeth.minerahistory.com/directory2.html[/ftp]

Hi, thank you for the information. I didn't know how long he was an innkeeper there. Do you know of anyone who happen's to live in the area that could get a picture of it for me? I know it's asking a lot but it would be a great addition to my family history file.
Thank you so much.

Hello everyone - Have just joined the site. Was informed about it by Rhiannon and Heather (researching Carringtons). Am amazed that I have not found the site before now, but thrilled that I've got here eventually. Just wanted to mention a few other books, which I have in my collection, about the area: Bwlchgwyn History of Bwlchgwyn (A translation of Edward Kendrick's Hanes Bwlchgwyn c 1905) ed. J. C. Davies. 1994. Bwlchgwyn School 1875 - 1975 J.C. Davies. The Geological Museum of North Wales - Guide to Musem Bwlchgwyn Quarry. Coedpoeth: "Doniau Da" Tonau a Chaniadau gan Tom Carrington Rehoboth Chapel 1955. Cylchgrawn Weslyaidd Coedpoeth 1888 - 1893. (Lots of information, names etc. here, but needs time to translate as in Welsh). Coedpoeth Past by Robert Edwards (Star Press) Translation of a talk in Welsh given in 1925, but with some wonderful photos of the area. Gwynfryn: The story of Gwynfyn (1980 - Author not named) nice photos of the area. Minera: Minera Lead Mines and Quarries ed. John Bennett 1995.
One of my 'projects' is to compile a list of publicatons about the area (Wrexham and all surrounding villages), any additions to the list would be very welcome. PC

Brymbo and its Neighbourhood. by Graham Rogers. 1991. ISBN 0 7074 0205 0 This is full of information on many aspects of the village, Churches, chapels, inns, farms . estates, Ffrwd canal and the steel works are just a few.
Not Long Ago by Glyn Davies . IBSN 0 906410 05 3. Published in 1984 by the Clwyd Voluntary Services Council. This is a really nice little booklet of the memories of Glyn Davies about his life in Minera and the area . I am not 100% sure but I think he was the father of J C Davies who has written many more books .
The Spark Still Glows, or Gwersyllt 1 . E May Horton. ISBN 1 870106 01 6 Published 1986
Memories of her childhood in Gwersyllt with lots of information on the Council School, Post Office, The Congegational Chapel and other places in the area.

Latest books in my reading collection which I would reccomend to fellow members...
When the dust has settled by Tom Ellis
Real Wrexham by Grahame Davies
What is of particular interest to me is that both books feature significant sections on my late relation of Coedpoeth, Euryn Wynne Lewis who was a most talented artist.
This thread will now be a 'sticky' so that books (which contain local historical interest) can be added by all members.

Can any one help me? My gt gt grandad Edward Kelly was landlord of the Welsh Harp pub Coedpoeth, (his son John Kelly was landlord after him) Does anyone of any pictures or information on this pub. I know where it is andthat it is now a private house but would love to know what it looked like in the 1800s. Also the Queens Head Pub Coedpoeth I know this is a private house now but old photos would be lovely

Thanks to everyone who have given names of books on Coedpoeth. I have a recent picture of the Queens Head pub as it is today but does anyone have a photo of the pub in the early 1900s or before?

Hi Mo11y
You could try contacting some of the local archives in Wrexham or Ruthin to see if they have anything. If no luck there what about posting a wanted message on ebay?

Hi, I was very lucky then. I obtained a copy of Minera - A Brief Glimpse last year for 50p in the most unusual place, Betws-y-Coed. There is a shop by the pedestrian crossing which I always visit when passing as sometimes they have books brought in from the back room which cover the Wrexham/Coedpoeth/Minera/Hope area. Have a look when you next go by. You may never know.

It would be nice to be able to afford the book at Amazon's market place price of £32.50. I'm very pleased, though, that I don't want to buy another book in the list:
Minera Irl plc Acquisition Manual (2009 edition) - available for a mere £1950.00!
In the end it's all relative, though. If I was desperate for the book it would probably cost a lot more than £32.50 to travel to Wrexham or Coedpoeth libraries and pay for photocopies of the 5% of the book that I would be allowed for research purposes - and I would have 100% of the book.
