My ancestor Robert Williams was born in Mold in June 1836, but lived in Minera and Coedpoeth with his wife Hannah (nee Jones?). The 1881 census describes Robert as a Leadwasher living in Gottaea, Minera. By 1891 he was in Wons(?) Row, Smelt, Coedpoeth. I've identified six children - Robert (abt.1865), Jeremiah (1868), Mary (abt.1873), Sarah (abt.1879), Harriet Alice (1882) and Rebecca (1886). Strangely I haven't been able to find the family listed in any censuses prior to 1881.
Their second son Jeremiah, my great grandfather, was originally a miner. In the 1901 census he lived in Smelt Road, Coedpoeth with his wife Sarah (nee Davis) of Rhos. Their children were Jessie (1891), Robert Henry (1895), Rebecca (abt.1898), Sam (1900), Edwin (1901), Mary (abt.1905), Alice, Sarah (Sally), John, Jerry and Emlyn. Following wife Sarah's death after the birth of Emlyn in 1912, Jeremiah resettled the whole family to Chirk, working as a stone quarryman, though most of his sons became miners.
I'd be interested in hearing from anyone with connections to the family! Does anyone know what part of Minera Gottaea might be?

For anyone else searching, ancestry haas estimated Roberts date of birth as 1834, I can't work out Gottaea or Gollaea unless it was originally cottage and the enumerator was on the drink when he wrote them up!
I suspect that the 1891 address is Wms, or Williams, Row, Smelt?

It`s definately Gottaea , previous houses are Ty Brith, Pen y Bont, Brook Side, Mill Cottages then Gottaea, then Minera Boys and Girls school, so it looks like it could be on the Wern Road going down to the bridge over the river.
Looking at Yesteryear in Minera by JC Davies it says` a little further along Wern Rd in the field opposite Plas Gwyn is Cwtia, or Cyttiau ( several ways of spelling it ) ` it seems to have been a thatched building , and was still there till about 1916. Could this be it ?

Anne Welcome back! Yes that is the location as Cliff rightly pointed out, however the house/houses were in ruins during my time in Minera school; I passed this site very day, and during the latter days of the war there were only a couple of courses of stone still remaining, and it was well grassed over. Some good blackberries in that field, exactly opposite Plas gwyn on the road down to the Felin Hill. Hen Locsin

I like the description of the area. It just leaves me wondering why the cottage is called gottaea - as we all agree, it is written that way in the census, but I can't connect it with anything local or scriptural.

More from JC Davies ,` Cyttiau means long huts. I have one or two photographs of the thatched building. Before the first chapel was built in 1804 the Weslyans used to hold religious services in the biggest of these, which was the home of a Richard Roberts. Last people to live there were Alice Ann Jones and her parents till c 1916, although she lived at Berwig Farm for the next 50 years or so , she was always known as " Nan Cwtia "`In another book " Cyttaeau . ( Cytia ) Formerly a farm, situated in a field on opposite side of road to Plas Gwyn, before Penybryn chapel wa built 1804 services were held in one of the thatched cottages." I wonder what happened to the photographs I went to JC Davies`s house a couple of times and it was a treasure trove of local history. He was such a helpful gentleman, and gave all the time he had to help.

Hi Anne, I would assume that all his files are in possession of his widow, who I understand is almost as active as Cliff was in local history etc., and has or is currently involved in a " footpath project" around Minera and environs, that was dear to Cliff's heart. Locsin

Hello everyone I'm sorry for the delay in replying, I think I was unsubscribed from the Forum and didn't receive any notice of the responses - I just revived my account and discovered all these posts. Deep apologies!
This is all fascinating reading. I haven't really moved any further in my research on my family's time in Coedpoeth, but I'd very much like to see those photos of the thatched buildings pre demolition if they ever turn up.
Scarlett (if you're reading this) - I'd very much like to connect... if we haven't done so already!

Here is a pic of Minera abt 1970 showing Plas Gwyn in the centre and as Y Cyttiau was situated exactly across the road from the front of this house it should give you an idea of the surrounding area.-Tom Attachments:

Eureka ;D Right , my profile now has added details Member's Bio - Modify Profile - Bookmarks - Social NetworksI had a look at the Help section and looked at Bookmarks. So it seems I have to have to click bookmarks, and I get a list of threads that have been bookmarked. At the RH side top there is a `manage bookmarks ` tab, click on this and I get a new page . Bookmarks To remove a bookmark, check the box next to it. If you wish to be notified when a new post is made in a thread you have bookmarked, select which type of notification you would like.Williams family in Minera and Coedpoeth By default, when you bookmark a thread, what type of notification would you like to receive when a new post is made in that thread? Then there is a choice of “ No notification, Personal message , or email. “ Choose which one I want, and then click on “update bookmarks and preferences” Simples - NOT Until I get my ongoing broadband problems sorted I won`t bother, a BT engineer is coming tomorrow to take a look, if it is their problem - no charge, but with my luck there`s bound to be a fault that is mine and then I have to pay.
