Ago I think that this is the remains of a 3 inch mortar bomb, possibly smoke or illumination, I would think unlikely high explosive as too much remains. This would be in keeping with the training at Divisional Level within the area. Although open too alternative thoughts.

Ago, Reference Kynoch Eley, this was and still is a manufacturer of rim fire and shot gun cartridges. Started at Witton Birmingham and incorporated into ICI Witton Birmingham which became the manufacturing base of " ICI Metals ", and which became independant of ICI in 1977. During WW2, manufactured a wide range of munitions. This is why you have seen the mark on shot gun cartridges and why you mortar remain included ici. What the 12 stands for I am still trying to find out.

Ago, Having looked at the photo, I think you may have hit the nail on the head. The remains in both photos look very similar. Good hunting

Ago, Found this with regards to Ruabon Moutain, Search light battery located at SJ27444844. Also area has been used for grouse shooting for over 150 years with a number of shooting butts. Go to www.rcahmw.gov.uk/media/199.pdf This was a survey conducted in 2002/2003, the file also contains maps which may of help. Cannot find any mention of official firing ranges within the area but certainly has been used as a add hoc training area.
