this was my great uncle and brother of lewis Williams b1863. I have information that John "was killed at Ffrwd" (colliery?) but I have no details, and he does not appear on the cmhrc database of coalminers killed. Can anybody shed light? He may well be buried in Cymmau. Was there a colliery at Ffrwd?

Hi Peter Are you able to narrow down the date of death? Perhaps he disappears from a particular census or you have him witnessing a marriage and then nothing later? If you weren't able to locate him on the census and require help to do this, someone on the site maybe able to help if you provide some further information. There was certainly a colliery at Ffrwd but someone with more knowledge of the local area may be able to help you further. eluned

I do not have a date of death though a photo shows him in his early mid twenties so I guess 1880-1890. I can see him in 1861 census aged 4 but have drawn a blank in 1871. Best wishes Peter, - by the way my father was minster of Rehoboth from 1975 to his death in 1978.

FATAL COLLIERY ACCIDENTS . The Wrexham Advertiser, Friday, November 09, 1883; A collier named Williams while engaged at Ffrwd Colliery Gwersyllt was buried beneath a fall of rock and died from the injuries received. Another collier named Smallwood also met with his death in a similer manner while working at Plas Power SouthseaNo first name given so I`ll have a `rummage` Bingo ;D ;D ;D How about this one not quite the right age though.

this looks very promising - the only problem is the date. My John was born 1857 so would have been 26 by 1883 not 20 unless is is a typo. His full family is
father Davies(Daniel in one Census but this is wrong) W b 1823 Hope coalminer Mother Mary W b 1830 Llandegla a herbalist apparently sister jane b1854 Hope/Cymau brother Robert b 1861 Cymau, a bricklayer/builder in Brymbo and renowned revivalist preacher. Big part in founding Cymau chapel, Eglws Fethodistiad brother lewis b 1863 Cymau, my taid and later manager of Point of Ayr colliery. Lay preacher. sister hannah b1866 Cymau and later married Charles Anderson b 1858 Coedpoeth a Methodist lay preacher. See post elswhere on this site about him.
Thanks Peter

There`s nothing more to identfy him in the online Papers. I thought there may have been a death notice . A look at 1881 a lot of John Williams about the same age, all in the same area, and all coal miners. He doesn`t seem to be buried in Cymau C M . Chapel. But this poor lad is. nothing to do with your search but I thought I`d remember him. BAUGH John Donald, Maesteg, Cymau. Killed at Llay Hall Colliery aged 15 Years buried 22/04/1941

As to the fatal accident of John Williams, the other person was Robert Smallwood died 5th November 1883 at Plas Power Colliery, age 30 years, a Coal Miner who was accidently killed by fall off Roof in a Coal Pit. Death certified by Belvis H Thelwell, Coroner for Denbighshire. Inquest held 14th November 1883. I have been unable to find a copy of the inquest. I was told by Hawarden Record Office that the Inquests for this era were lost/discarded. However, Robert Smallwood was buried at Bryn Sion Chapel cemetery, Brymbo. Perhaps your John Williams was also buried there. It's worth a look and also worth getting in contact with Tom Mercer. He has the inscriptions for that cemetery.

some new information has come to light from family papers. My John Williams born 1857 is said to have been killed "in the Blast, Brymbo" rather than Ffrwd colliery as above. Also the press cutting above may be a little late (by 2-3 years). Any info gratefully received. Peter

sorry what I really meant to say is that my John was not 20 in 1883 - he would have been 26!
