An email received from Ed Tinn...
Hello
My name is Ed Tinn and we've lived at The Old Gate House on the junction of the Old Road (Hen Ffordd) and Fronheulog Hill for over twenty years.
We bought the property from the previous owners Mr and Mrs Davies who had converted the three Old Gate Cottages (in a ruined state I believe) into the current house approximately twenty years before we bought it and then called it The Old Gate House. At one stage our electricity bill was named as the Old Gate Cottages.
I'm afraid I have no old photographs, only fairly recent photos of the house and garden in the snow, and even the house being extended, but I guess that's pretty boring unless you have some earlier photos, but I would be grateful for any information on the history of the house.
I believe the cottages were built circa 1832 and part of our garden looks to have been quarried. Could they have been associated with Fronheulog Hall?
I have been told that Old Gate signifies a toll house (others being the house on the junction of the road from the Ffrith and Cefn Road as you turn right to the Twenty Houses in Bwlchgwyn; the fishery in Llandegla; and the house on the right of the Ruthin/Llanarmon junction).
I've tried the 1901 Census Online but I can't find Bwlchgwyn - my error no doubt.
My two daughters were both happily educated at the (then) new school in Bwlchgwyn where I was Chairman of the Governors for a number of years, so my interest is not mine alone.
So no advancement in your research I'm afraid but any any information will be gladly received.
Thanks
Best Regards
Ed Tinn
