Hi and welcome The only word I know that springs to mind is 'priod' meaning spouse/married Could you tell us in what context the word was used please? I only have knowledge of basic graveyard Welsh but hopefully someone will be able to assist you.

There are a couple places called Prion in North Wales. Many small villages and chapels are called after biblical names, Horeb, Sinia, Carmel, Bethesda. etc. I think perhaps Prion is one of these names, possibly named because of it`s position. Ephesus The city stood upon the sloping sides and at the base of two hills, Prion and Coressus, commanding a beautiful view. Certainly a beautiful view from Bwlchgwyn

Thank you all very much for your information, if you look to the right of the old Post Office there is a sand stone archway with the name "Prion" carved into the stone and there seems to be alot of sandstone in and around the property and garden maybe there was once a building in the garden? When I get the time I will pop into the library and check through the archives, Thank you all once again

Hi, I have been speaking to a Bwlchgwyn resident who remembers the cottage "Prion" behind the Old Post Office and you are correct in assuming this was the entrance. She tells me the cottage was built of similar stone as the arch and it seemed to stand up in the air, as it was positioned higher than the Post Office.-Regards Tom

Thank you so much Tom,Its so nice to put another piece into the Prion jigsaw, this could also be why there is a set of stone stairs in the house that lead to nowhere, maybe they joined up to the old cottage.
I have read that the old post office was once a grocers and a blacksmiths
kindest regards jacqueline

I have been told the last families to occupy "Prion" were named "Nuttall" & "Morris"--It was also suggested that the original owners probably had a connection with the village of Prion just outside Denbigh and that may have influenced the choice of name. My friend also has been in touch with an expert in old welsh and assures me the nearest word in the english language for prion is---origination. Cheers Tom

I keep finding lots of the old lime stone coping stones in the garden,it must have been quite a nice house once upon a time. There was once a Blacksmiths at Prion so I suspect there was a well close by for the use of the farrier so I'll keep hunting. thank you once again Tom x
