Tominera, Try these two web sites. 1 www.rwfphotos.co.uk This a web site for former members and families of those who served in The Regiment. You may find photos., of the 16th Battallion members. 2nd is www.warpath.orbat.com Go to British Infantry, then R.W.F., then 16th Battallion. This tells you when it was formed/disbanded and where it served and with which Brigade, Division. From this you can study the actions the Battallion took part in. Hope this helps your research. Good Luck

Hi, Thankyou to all who have contributed in any---much appreciated. I have obtained some of the info I wanted but not the main one which was when did he(personally) go to France. These details may not be available but having seen very detailed histories on this site over the years I thought I would give it a go. Thanks again Tom

Many WW! service records were destroyed by bombing in WW2. However, I would reconmmend contacting the Regimental Museum. See my previous post. They hold individual records plus he would not have been posted to France on his own, so they may well have hold the date when the unit was posted including departure and arrival sites.

Numbers around him enlisted/called up late April 1918. There's a tranche of men around him who were placed in 3rd Battalion, then in Ireland, for training and subsequently posted to France end August 1918 and allocated (mostly) to 16th and 1st Battalions first week in September.
See pension papers for 87179 Harold Shaw of Delhi House, Wrexham Road, Brynteg who was in 16th Bn and supports what I say. Also in the 16th Bn, pension papers for 87154 Edward William Griffiths, 17 Lorne Street, Rhosddu who was gassed on 4 11 1918 (survived)
16th Bn War Diary shows receiving 76 reinforcements on 5th Sept.
For the 4th November it says (summarised): 113th Bde attacked 0830. Heavy casualties in assembly positions. Very few casualties in the attack. All objectives gained. Casualties in the Ranks, 23 killed 85 wounded. Bear in mind that the Germans were on the retreat by this time and therefore the actions were not of the fully entrenched positions type as they were in the previous years.
Below are those on CWGC for the 16th Bn for 4th Nov. Caveat: some mioght be Died of Wounds from previous actions. Hopefully, if it works, clicking on the number at the end of each line will open up the CWGC page. Gwil

Hi, Thanks for all the info--I really wanted to know if Charles could have been in the UK in 1918 apart from other things and you have answered this with what seems like a very very probable yes. Thanks again as I now have plenty to put in and work on etc. Regards Tom
