I was speaking to the caretaker at Coedpoeth today, he was saying he had been up at 3 am removing bodies from Rehoboth and re burying them at Coedpoeth. It then seems the details have to be submitted to the Home Office to say they have been removed. I didn`t have time to ask a lot, but I wonder they were people that have descendants that requested that they be reburied I think that there are more to be moved.
Are the unlucky ones with no headstones or relatives that know where they are to be buried under a block of flats. Very sad !!!. Anyway the graves are now on the LH side of the Manley Road entrance. One headstone was so old I couldn`t read it. Other were -- Joseph son of Joseph and Eleanor Kelly died April 1872 aged 3 weeks. Also Elizabeth died April 13 1816 aged 10 Joseph Kelly father of the above died Feb 1 189?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Edward Kelly anwyl briod Elizabeth Kelly.Ebril 17 1877 . 62 Elizabeth 1899 . 81 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Griffith Evans 1892 Elizabeth Evans 1866. There may be more names on this , it is a small square block, I couldn`t see all round . ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Frank mab Moses and Harriet Carrington 1860 . 15 ? Jane 1862 . 2 Moses 1879 . 1fl ? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Richard Roberts 1845 aged 77
-------------------------------------------------------------------------- I`m almost certain that there is a MI`s book , but that doesn`t help all those persons without headstones .

Thank you Annette for taking the time and trouble to record these stones - they are not my relatives but it would have been such a shame if they had been lost.

Thank you very much Annetteedwards for taking the time to write and provides us with this information, the Carrington's are my ancestors and what you have done has been a big help to me, I've also got to mention Heather as she has been fantastic in sharing and providing me details of our ancestors the Carringtons without her and poeple like you I would have nothing so you can see I am very grateful for everything, to me every information that is given is like gold dust which I treasure very much. Thank you.

I assume Annette has transcribed the headstones that have been transferred from Rehoboth to Coedpoeth cemetery.
What I find annoying is why all the headstones were not moved to Coedpoeth cemetery. Many years ago all the headstones in the graveyard were relocated around its perimeter, they have now all been taken 'I am told' to a salvage yard in Ruabon. For what I don't know, and I'd rather not guess.
Whilst we can argue each plot was bought by that respective family, so the graveyard belongs to the people buried in it obviously matters not to the Methodist Church. The Headstones were paid for by some families literally 'beg, steal or borrow'. I find it a final insult for these headstones to be removed from the village, let alone the site.

I wrote to the Home Office about this. Apparently Eric Roberts the Builders are going to build 8 flats on the site of Rehoboth chapel (it was one of the oldest buildings in the village) & tarmac over the main part of the graveyard to provide a car park for the flats. They will not be lifting any bodies.
When i asked the Home Office whether this was desecration, they replied it would be if Eric Roberts dug into the graves but its not if he just covers them over. The legislation was changed in 1981 to allow development to take place on old cemeteries.
I also phoned up Chris Jones from Eric Roberts and told him that I thought what his company was doing at Rehoboth was disgraceful. He didnt seem too concerned. It would appear only 8 gaves have been moved..these would be the ones closest to where the chapel once stood & would have been disturbed by footings work for the new flats.

Hi, My G.Grandparents, Griffth and Ellen Evans, have been reinterred at Coedpoeth cemetery. Their stone is the block mentioned by Annette. It used to be a column but only the base could be erected in the graveyard for safety reasons! The side not recorded above, shows Ellen d.1901. Griffith was a Preacher within the circuit since moving from Llanbedr in the mid 1850's. The "obelisk" or top part of the stone is now redundent and saved by the builders for a short time, in the hope that I can find it another home. Any ideas? 2X G.Grandparents William and Jane Evans have not been moved from the chapel. Anyone searching for baptisms, marriages and burials within the Coedpoeth Wesleyan circuit after 1888, may find them in the "Y Cylchgrawn", Welsh Wesleyan magazines, at A.N Palmer centre. Lynn

......The "obelisk" or top part of the stone is now redundent and saved by the builders for a short time, in the hope that I can find it another home. It would be interesting to know just what the fate of all the other headstones will be... ...Surely it would be decency that the developers should retain these within Coedpoeth. Decency however is a loose word in those circles.

Did anyone take photos of the stones prior to removal from Rehoboth? I thought that the builders had taken some but it turned out that they only took a few and these were mostly when requests were made to move them to Coedpoeth Cemetery

Here are a few stones at the Chapel. They had previously been placed around the perimeter of the Chapel yard. They have since been destroyed or removed to Coedpoeth Cemetery. Attachments:

The plaque erected at Coedpoeth cemetery. It would have been better if names of those reinterred had been added. Attachments:
