IGI William Cotton bapt 1796 June 16 Melton Mowbray son of John Cotton and Ann.
It looks like then that there was a family in Melton Mowbray which could be ours, but in Shepshed, not too far way there are many more Cottons.
The census record for 1841 is highly unlikely to be our John, as he had children born in Wrexham before then - but looking at the fact that this one has a stables and our John was a groom and born in the same place, then there must surely be some connection. It seems both had sons named John, William and Charles and a daughter named Mary.
