Hello. I wonder if anyone would be able to give me any information of point me in the right direction. I am trying to trace any members of the Foulkes family in the area to exhange information. My Great Grandfather was John Foulkes (1884-1937). He moved from Coedpoeth with his wife Jennie and their children to Dover in Kent some time around 1916, to work in the newly found coalfields there. John came from a big family (at least 9 siblings ) and I would like to know if they moved to other areas or stayed in Coedpoeth. Their names and dates of birth were: Edward Foulkes 1876 George Foulkes 1881 Thomas Foulkes 1883 Catherine Foulkes 1886 Elizabeth Foulkes 1889 Ann Foulkes 1891 David Foulkes 1893 William Foulkes 1895 Sarah Foulkes 1898 John's Father and mother were Edward Foulkes b1851 and Jane Griffiths b1859 both of Coedpoeth. Any help or advise would be most welcome as I have no-one to ask in Dover. I am 31 years old I am the oldest surviving member of my branch of that family. Thank you for reading, Elizabeth

Edward G L Foulkes born 1849 in Bersham was living at Nant, Bersham Minera near to Foulkes Row Nant in 1881, along with his wife Jane Foulkes aged 23 who was born in 1858 in Ruabon. Living with them at this time was their son Edward aged 4 born in 1876/7 in Bersham and a Jane Davies who is listed as a lodger but assume she is a sister she is age 38 and a widow also born in Bersham together with her son Evan Davies who is listed as his Nephew. As of yet I have not looked at any other census returns, Have to get the family ready for work and school tomorrow will hopefully have time to look later

It seems all my Foulkes were in Pontblyddyn in 1881 , and by 1901 in Gwersyllt. My Thomas was b 1833 and the father was Samuel, born Northop. There were brothers but where these went to I`ve no idea as yet. I`ve seen Foulkes all over Denbs and Flintshire from 1700s on. Sorry to have nothing really helpful to add.

Hello again Elizabeth
I have some further information for you regarding your Foulkes family In the 1891 Census, Edward Foulkes born 1877 is showing as a Farm Servant At Bullmans (I think this is a cottage) Esclusham Above aged 14 born in Minera, He is employed by an Edward Edwards, Lead Miner/ Farmer
The 1881 Census Shows his Grandfather Edward Foulkes age 70 (b circa 1811) a widower living in Brymbo Wrexham along with his Grand-Daughters Ann Jane Davies aged 15, Mary Davies aged 13, And Sarah Ellen Davies aged 9.
In 1871 Edward Foulkes is found on the Census for Nant Berhsam aged 60 a Widower living with Thomas Roberts a Collier age 25 born in Berham and his wife Miriam Roberts (nee Foulkes) aged 23 and their Daughter Amelia Roberts aged 5
Next door are the family of Davies, Head David Davies, Miner born Esclusham Above aged 27 together with his Wife Jane Davies (Nee Foulkes) age 28 born in Bersham and their children Ann F age 5 born 1866 in Bersham and Mary Davies aged 2 born 1869 Bersham.
In 1861 Edward Foulkes Widower is found on the Census at Nant, Bersham with his Children Ellen Foulkes aged 17 born in 1844 in Bersham, Edward Foulkes aged 11 Born 1849 Bersham & Sarah Foulkes aged 9 born 1851 Bersham.
On the 1851 Census Edward Foulks(note misspelling by enumerator) can be found aged 40 Head occupation miner/Publican born in Wrexham Denbighshire His wife Ann aged 35 born Circa 1816 in Wrexham Denbighshire together with their Children Jane Aged 8 born 1843, Daughter Ann Ellen aged 6 born 1845, Daughter Miriam aged 4 born 1847 and Son Edward George aged 1 born 1849
Sarah the youngest of Edward and Ann's Children, her birth was registered Q3 July Aug Sept 1851 in Wrexham Vol 27 page 285
Her Mother Ann Died in 1852 and her Death is recorded in Wrexham Q2 April May June Vol 11b page 249
The marriage of Edward Foulkes and Ann Jones is regstered at Wrexham Q1 1842 Vol 27 page 361 but can also be found on the Wrexham Marriages site at Wrexham St Giles Church (2) Page 25 1841-1846
The Baptism of Edward G Foulkes can be seen on the Parish Registers site (link available from Minera History.com Main Page) showing that Edward G Foulkes son Of Edward Foulkes Publican and Mother Anne was baptised at Minera St Mary Church on 19/10/1849
Apoligies regarding the name of the pub but the name is not given on either the census returns or the Baptism record, Someone who knows the Nant area well may be able to verify which pub it could have been. I cannot locate anything more recent for the Foulkes than Edward in 1891 maybe due to a misspelling I will try to search again another time Hope this helps for now

I have an Edward Foulkes (? - Jan 17, 1803 Llandegla) who married Alice Thomas (? - April 11, 1774 Llandegla) September 29, 1754 in Wrexham. Their daughter Jane (c1756-1847) married Thomas Carrington 1789
Jane had two younger brothers - don't have dates: Samuel Foulkes Aron Foulkes
Perhaps they tie in to the later Foulkes that have been located above.

Further to my last post re the Foulkes family. I now have Jane Foulk(e)s Carrington's death certificate Nov. 6, 1847 at age 88 in Llandegla. Present at death was Samuel Foulks Pen Maes Maelor, Llandegla. I found Samuel on the 1841 census of Llandegla with wife Mary, both aged "65". Just spent some time trying to locate a record of death because they are both appear to be gone by 1851. I found a Mary FOLKS and a Samuel FOLKS death's registered in Ruthin Q2 1850, both on the same page Have also located a death for Aaron FOULKS Q1 1849 registered Corwen. If this rings any bells with other Foulk(e)s researchers please make contact. thanks Heather

My maternal grandmother was born Ethel Foulkes on 1 Oct (1912 I think).
I don't know too much else about her family tree, but do know that she was brought by her Uncle thingy and Aunt Sarah (don't know their surname - sorry). They lived in a cottage in The Nant on the side of a hill. It was near to a bridge crossing a stream which I think was next to a shallow ford.
Sorry if this is vague, as I only visited once when I was about 10. I'm now a ripe old age of 46 and my memories are not what they were :-)
