Hello everyone, Can I just pick someones brains please. In the 1851 census my ancestor Edward Lloyd and his family were living at 33, Pen Y Bwlch, Llanbedr and it states he was a Publican.
Could anybody tell me if you have knowledge of the area, is Pen Y Bwlch a name of a street or is it the name of the pub where my ancestor was a Publican, the other names that is mentioned on the census sheet that I have is, 31 Pentre Celyn, 32, Pentre, then the above Pen Y Bwlch and then the next I can't make it out.
I will be greatful for any information that can be given. Thank you very much.

Hi Rhiannon, If you are looking at the original sheet then if you see the very left hand column, it will say No` of schedule. This does not mean it is the house number , but just the number of dwellings visited. So Pentre Bwlch, Pentre Celyn, Pentre could be quite a distance away from each other. Excuse me if you already knew this !!!. I`ve had a look at www.old-maps.co.uk/ for Llanbedr Dyffryn Clwyd, but can`t spot Pen Y Bwlch on it, have a look at this site , it is really good for finding places. Use the Gazetteer to find your county , then the alphabetical list of place names. You can move around to the L and R and Up and Down. Another idea is for you to find the tithe map for the area, they are at the Records Office, and will be much nearer the date of the census. From this you can find the landowner and occupier of the properties. Sorry I can`t help more.

Thank you very much, I will have a look at the old map site, see what I can find, I didn't think of looking at that to be honest. As for the number of Shedules I didn't know that I assumed they were houses next door to one another, thank you for pointing that out I will take that into consideration next time and not just assume its a house number.
Thank you
P.S.
Just a thought, if my ancestor was a Publican at the time of the census could the name be a name of the pub that he worked in ?

Is there any one else in the property described as a servant or something similer, maybe working there if it was an ale house. Can`t think of anything else,

Hello and good afternoon, No there is only his family living there, no other poeple, for his wifes occupation it has a word before the word wife but I can't make that out, as its not so clear.
Did most Publicans live at their place of work ?
Thank you

In a way you`ve helped me , I`ve just found my ancestor John Davies was in the Victoria Tavern Bodfari in 1851, so this site will be very usefull, I think the quarter sessions are worth a look, I know there is a CD in Wrexham Museum of Denbs Quarter sessions rolls, I can`t remember the dates it covers, trouble for me Bodfari is in Flints.

I am glad I can be of help, even though it was by accident ;D
I have a John Davies in the tree as well, well three actually, Grandfather, father and son, I don't know where the Grandfather came from as I haven't gone back that far but I know he was a Blacksmith at the time of his sons marriage, this son was born in Oswestry but later lived in Brymbo along with his wife and family, his son John was a Coal Hewer.
I've just had an email back saying that 33 was a schedule number and not the number of the house, the name Pen Y Bwlch was the name of a single property, but unfortunaley its not shown on the 1879 ordnance map, The houses listed near are, Pentre, Rhiwysg and the Griffen which was and still is a Pub, so could this be my ancestors pub ? so, somehow I need to find information about who ran this pub in 1851.
I will take another look at that site you gave me and see what I can find. Thank you.
