hello,can anyone tell me how this works,the glass bubbles are for asertaining the strenth of spirits accurately adjusted,i bought this when i was working in jersey looks like an interesting currio, have found this on the web but no information on how it works,made by william twaddell spirit maker glasgow,succesor trade to the late james brown the inventor,any ideas?. Well it`s obviously used for the same purpose as a modern hydrometer. They float in the wine/beer/ spirits and have a scale to show what the alcohol content is. All the balls seem to numbered and correspond to a scale on the lid marked for wine /strong wine / spirits etc. They seem to all be the same size, but are they the same weight Normally there is a rod that floats upright in the liquid. Is that the thing at the side with a ball attached Perhaps you choose the ball that matches the scale, insert into a rod or stem and then as it floats it gives you the alcohol content.
