Anyone Know the history of the gates at Bwlchgwyn community centre. The gates and field were designated as a St. George field in trust many years ago in the reign on King George. Anyone know if there were trustees or the like or how the designation came about. Who was the landowner originally??

I'm sure I've read something about them on the Wrexham Council website, so it might be worth a search. From memory - the land was originally common land and had been taken over by a commission - it wouldn't have been the forestry commission, but had a similar name, when the land in Bwlchgwyn was forcibly enclosed. You can find out about the King George's Fields Foundation on the internet, too; it was set up in 1936 to provide areas of land for use as children's playing fields - Bwlchgwyn's Field has always been known as "the rec", the field in Bwlchgwyn dates from the 30s, I think. Here's a link: fieldsintrust.org/KGV.aspx

Thanks for the information. It,s possible that the Bwlchgwyn councillors on Brymbo com. coun. are to suggest a restoration project. The gates are somewhat in need of restoration and this needs to be done with the historic context being taken on board.

Although I moved away years ago (to find work), I still have my family in the village and my interest it, and I agree that any restoration should retain the links to the original funding for the gates, that would be nice.
