Hi, I can only confirm this piece of machinery was a winch with what looks like a steel rope of at least one inch thick and powered by compressed air or maybe steam.Quite a powerful bit of kit.- I never came across one of these powered by steam but saw several very similar operated by compressed air when I worked down Llay Main Colliery for a short spell early 1950's. I often operated one. They were used to haul timber and materials to the coal face at that time but I am certain there are people out there who know an awful lot more than me about this winch. Freestanding winches slightly smaller than this one with a winding handle each side were used in Brymbo Steelworks on a regular basis as a solution in situations were conventional lifting or hauling was impossible. Regards Tom

Many thanks for your help Tom. The owner of the picture (widow of one of the grandsons of Jonathan) has told me that it was something to do with a water pump.

The photo could be of the winding gear for a pit. It would usually be housed inside an engine house but this photo may be showing it before it is completed. There doesn't seem to be any pipes connected to it and neither is the cable connected to anything.
