Hi, The Welsh side of my family are from the Coedpoeth/Bersham area, Halkyn Mountain in Flintshire and the Wrexham area. Ellis Williams (1861-1919) was my great-grandfather. He was originally from Hope but married Jane Salisbury of Bersham in 1888. I am the granddaughter of Edith, his daughter by his first marriage. He also had two children by his second wife (Eliza Jones 1867-1904), Myfanwy and William A. Eliza's illegitimate son Edward Samuel Jones was added to the family and took the last name Williams until adulthood. After Eliza Jones died Ellis married Eliza (Davies) Williams, and her son by her first husband, Jonathon, William E., became Ellis's stepson. In addition she and Ellis had three children together, Dora Mae, Wilfred and Arthur.
My grandmother told me she lived for a time as a child with her grandmother in a pub near Wrexham. Jane's mother had already died. Ellis was illegitimate and brought up by his uncle Thomas Roberts (whose name he took temporarily as a child). I've not been able to find anything on Mary Williams, his mother, after his baptism. I think she may have moved out of the area. So Edith was probably just told that the woman who took care of her was her grandmother. However, I am wondering whether there was another family connection. Ellis would have needed care for Edith between 1893, when Jane died, and 1896 when he married Eliza Jones. Interestingly, Myfanwy, Edith's sister, worked for Eleanor Williams at the Crown Inn in Talwrn in 1909 and lived there until she got married. However, Eleanor was Eleanor Owens from Llandegla and I don't think we are related. I also couldn't find any link for Elizabeth Salisbury of the Gladstone Arms or the Jane Parry also mentioned in prior posts, even though both names are 'in the family.'
I was so pleased to find this site and the fascinating information on it, and would love to get any more information about my ancestors. I grew up on Deeside but have been in the US for almost fifty years. I do remember my Dad taking us on family drives up in the area, but I don't remember a lot of details. However, there was a topiary sign of a town name that I've never forgotten I know it's not there anymore because we drove by the place on a visit years ago. The town began with 'Pen'. I'd like to hear about that too if anyone remembers it.
Thanks, Helen.
