I looked at this some time ago while searching for ancestors that I didn`t find in the Minera Parish Register, even though a couple of children had been baptised in the Church. I knew that the family had later become non-conformist, and was lucky enough to find two names in the registers. I was able to find the graves and even luckier to see they had very impressive monuments. From the initial two grave owners , I found had six relatives buried there. This register contains the names of the grave owners, and where they lived, but does not give any details of who is buried in them, and unfortunately there are no dates either. The cause of this chapel began in the early years of the 19c, services were held by students of the Wrexham Academy in a thatched hut at Ochr y Nant which was occupied by Edward Pritchard. After two or three years they were held at Stryt, Minera as it was more convenient for the population. Soon after they were held in the house of Mary Edwards where in the beginning of 1805 a church was incorporated and the first communion administered by Rev, Edwards Jenkins of Penybryn Wrexham. In September 1805 a small chapel was built, this soon became too small and was converted into a house, another larger chapel was built in 1807, and the famous preacher William Williams, later known as Williams o`r Wern was called upon to preach here. In 1825 the chapel was enlarged and a piece of land bought for a burial ground. Williams o`r Wern died in 1840 and was buried in the graveyard. There is a very impressive memorial , which is still standing. From this we know that the earliest names in the register have to be about 1825. I don`t know as yet when the chapel was demolished, but there are entries in the back of the register , with the names and dates of the persons buried. These are from about 1930s. I have started to transcribe this register , but as the book is so old and fragile, it will take more than a few visits to the museum. It may help any of you who have `lost` ancestors, you may recognise the names and places. What I would like to know is if there is any interest in my carrying on with this, feedback would be appreciated. Annette.

Hi again Annette you never cease to amaze me with information that you bring to the forum, I would be more than willing to help you with your transcribing and I have also had an idea myself to try and put together a database of Monument isncriptions from the churches records that cover Minera coedpoeth etc and would like to ask your advice and help for that project to get started. the only thing is with your project regarding the wern chapel is that I live about 30 miles away and im not even allowed to drive yet following my surgery. but i am more than willing to try and put your information into an electronic format so that it can be searched via the internet, Im sure there would be people who would love for that information to come available via the world wide web

The register is at the Wrexham museum, it cannot be photo copied, it is too fragile. I asked about using a digital camera, but for some reason was told that I could only copy three pages . Why, I `m not sure, unless it is to prevent my making profit from it, Ebay maybe !!!!. Now that`s a thought. The only option left is to write it all down freehand and copy it into a Word Doc format. The titles of the pages are in Welsh, but seem to be just the Row numbers. I suppose it could be put on this site in that way, As I said it will take a few visits, but I only live a couple of miles away, and have time to do it. Annette

Not sure if you two are aware, but JC Davies has produced a booklet on Wern Chapel graveyard... Llyfr Mynwent (Graveyard Record) of Capel Y Wern, Esclusham Above (1803 -1960).

I now have a copy of the transcript of these papers, it consists of the names of the graveowners and sadly has no dates of when the plots were bought. It does have the placename where that person lived. It gives Row and Plot numbers , and also tells which side of the path they are. The last burials took place in 1935, the actual details of these are in the book. I will post the 1932 - 35 burials on the forum later., in case some-one can find them of interest . I have been there myself about 18 months ago, and even though the place is really overgrown, it is quite easy to locate a grave, with the use of a machete, flame gun, head to toe protective clothing , wellies, etc. It is a shame to see this graveyard in such a state. Some of the graves still have the Glass domes with the artificial flowers inside, how old are they I wonder.

I love it when this sort of information becomes available. I'm sure everybody appreciates the time and effort you have spent bring this information online I have tried to translate the welsh details to english for you in what i think is the correct format I'm sure if I'm not correct someone will correct me (thinking of a person who's avatar is currently holding a giant Leek ) anyway here goes : 1932 Pentre Fron Brymbo Lydia Roberts wife of Robert Roberts formerly of Tir y Celyn Wern died Jan 18 1932 aged 75 plot owner Robert Roberts. Tir Y Celyn, Left 1932 Feb 4 Ann Foulkes Bryn Tirion, New Brighton, Minera died 31 Jan 1932 30th March 1932 Isaac Edwards, 6 Tudor Street, Coedpoeth died 27th March 1932 aged 68 plot owner Edward Edwards, Nant, Right 1933 Sarah Ann Jones aged 47 crossed over 11/06/1933 buried 15th June Row 12 on the right 1934 Serah Roberts aged 84 died 18/07/1934 passed away at Highes Wilford Farm, Esclusham Above. was buried on 23rd July 1934 Plot owner Roberts, Highes Wilford Row 16 on the left Caroline Williams aged 72 died 13/01/1935 of 12 Lower Road, Nant, Bersham Grave owner David Jones, Nytha, Nant Row 19 23rd on the left

It seems I had made an error and the entry for John Thomas should be that he died on 16/9/1932. Another possible error could be the grave number, it is definately Row 14 grave 20 Left in the booklet, but on cross checking the grave owners list , this plot was bought by James Jones, Bwlch Gwyn ddau Gan AND grave 19 is owned by David Thomas, Wern.
The booklet I am copying from is not the original, but a copy done some years ago, it does state that there may be a few mistakes because the original needed a magnifying glass, having seen this I can well understand that some words may be incorrect.
As for names and dates of burials in the graves, these are in the burial register, which is an entirely different book altogether. Hopefully sometime in the future these can be photocopied and transcribed for use on the Minera site, they are held in Bangor Library and are available for anyone who can`t wait ;D
There is an entry for my gt grandfather Joseph Wilcoxon, he bought a plot and when I found it - it was a double plot with a tall obelisk type stone, but there were only two of his children who died very young buried there. Joseph is actually in Coedpoeth, so it maybe that the chapel and graveyard were closed before he and most likely some others actually died.
For the time being if anyone would like me to look for a name in the Grave owners Register, feel free to ask, you never know, a trip to the graveyard could throw up a whole load of surprises.
Hope this helps a little.

Soon after they were held in the house of Mary Edwards where in the beginning of 1805 a church was incorporated and the first communion administered by Rev, Edwards Jenkins of Penybryn Wrexham. This is a very interesting snippet, Annette. I've discovered that my Davies Edward Daives was baptised at Penybryn Independent Chapel in 1801. If his parents were Congregationalsts living in Minera, which Davies gives as his birthplace in the 1851 census, would Penybryn have been the nearest chapel? The presence of Rev Edwards at Wern suggest a close link between the two. Keith
