This may sound daft, but when you have a name - say Elizabeth for instance, and you call her Betty or Lizzie, what is that called, not nick names but something else. I have a Lily, but all records point to her actually being Louisa, I can`t find a site that has this sort of info . Help please Found a site thanks to nighthingych That site censor is at it again night watch www.nireland.com/anne.johnston/Diminutives.htm

HI,
I don't know that there is an official name - it's not exactly a pseudonym or Also Known As or even an alias; in a narrative I suppose I would put one of the names in brackets after the other Betty (Elizabeth) or Elizabeth (Betty) depending on the context, by way of explanation I would probably say "known as" or "usually referred to /called" .
Otherwise - don't know! Hilary

Hi
I think the correct term for this is "diminutive name".
