Before 1884 members belonged to Offa Weslyan Church until a disagreement took place over the appointment of a Sunday School Superintendant.
Mr Lester offered a room in his house for meetings and in March 1884 a room was built over his coach house and out buildings at Bryn Offa especially for the Adwy Church to meet.
Eventually money was raised to pay for a new building and the present Church was built on Smithy Road, it opened in 1897. The name was changed to Bethlehem.
The first baptism in the Adwy Church was on August 10th 1884, Samuel Edward, son of William Hughes and his wife Elizabeth. William was a miner and lived at Penygelli. Samuel was born on Sept 25 th 1883.
The first marriage took place on 26th June 1927 after the Church was licensed. The happy couple were Robert D Peters son of Abram Peters of Smelt, and Rosina Roberts daughter of Samuel Roberts of 5 New Road , Adwy.
The first burial service was for Ann Jones a widow aged 71, she died on March 24 th 1885 and is buried at Daresbury. Cause of death was given as `paralysis`
At the present time there are only three members of the Church and even though services are still held from time to time the future looks bleak.
I was speaking to one of those three today and she told me that whatever happens they will remain to keep the Church going to be able to celebrate the landmark of 125 years in 2009 - then it seems unless more members attend it will go the same way as many others and close forever.
What happens then, It is a very nice spot, with a beautiful view,
will it be ` redeveloped` as other old buildings have been or more than likely torn down for a block of apartments to be built.
