Hi Everyone,
My name is David Thomas. I live in Newton -Le –Willows, Merseyside,
formerly, Newton in Makerfield, Lancashire. In the 1901 English census my great grandfather William Thomas is living in Newton in Makerfield, with his wife Emily, his daughter also Emily and his son William jnr, my Grandfather. Also in the house, as lodgers, are his brother, John (Jack) Thomas, (b 1880) and his uncle David (b 1850)
The 3 adult males all give their place of birth as Coedpoeth.
In the 1891 Wales census, I find my g/grandfather, William, living in Brynteg. He is there with his parents John and Ellen Thomas. John was born in 1846 in Broughton, Ellen was born in 1848.
William’s siblings are Hannah, b 1875, Jane, b 1877 John (Jack), Mary, b1882 Dora, b 1884 and Emma, b 1890. The census gives their birth place as Broughton.
The Thomas family must have lived in Brynteg, quite a while as they are listed in the 1881 census, when Jack is 11 months old. However the census states that they were all born in Bersham, apart from Jack who is listed as born in Broughton.
In 1861, I find my g/g/grandfather, John, with his brother David (listed in 1901 as a lodger b 1850) and their parents William, b 1813 and Elizabeth b 1809. I cannot make out where they are listed as living at this time. The top listing is Coedpoeth, but near the Thomases I can’t make it out properly and I think it begins with “T”.
I suspect that Elizabeth is not their mother, as 2 other siblings are listed. Enoch and Elizabeth Rogers. These show up in the 1851 census with Elizabeth Rogers as head of household.
Jack Thomas settled down in Newton. He married Hannah Maria. They had 4 children, John jnr, William, Jane and Ellen. Jack died during WW1. He died in Sept 1918 and is buried at Terlincthun, near Boulogne France. We visited his grave last year.
In 1901, his sister Dora, is listed as living in Tyldesley, Manchester. With her mother, Ellen and her younger sister, Emma. Dora moves to Newton and marries a John William Riding. He is from Counden County Durham. They have 3 children, Albert, Sam & Doris. John was killed on the first day of the Somme. He is buried at Beaumont-Hamel cemetery, just south of Arras. We visited his grave, just last week. Dora remarried a chap called Cliffe.
It was thought that the Thomases came from farmers and then became colliers, but not sure of that.
I have learned that a lot of the collieries in Newton, Haydock and St Helens, were owned by a welsh man, Richard Evans.
Apparently he recruited people from the Wrexham area to work in his mines in those areas. How true this is, I am uncertain.
So, I am trying to find out if there are any of my Thomases left around Coedpoeth. If you know of any, please get in touch. Dave
