On the 1871 census decendents of mine, John and Jane Davies, are listed as living in / renting rooms in what I think is called the 'Hand Inn' Bwlchgwyn. I can find no other reference to a 'Hand Inn'. Ofcourse I may be misreading the hand writting on the census return. If the census was conducted according to street plans it looks as if it would have been next door to a grocers shop. Does anyone have any info on such a place? Many Thanks Col
PS - Oh by the way, I'm new here so Hello Everyone!!

Ok, I've just looked up the Hand Inn in Pubs and Inquests and I have a question. I had presumed that John and Jane Davies were just renting rooms in the pub as the 1871 census says he was a Lead Miner but the book states "The last person to hold the license was John Davies in 1871. There was no application to renew the license in 1872"
Is it likely that they are one in the same person and John had two occupations or the licensee was a different John Davies who didn't live on the property?

I'm not an expert but one of my ancestors was a lead miner but also had a shop. Also pubs back then were often just run from very small premises and not what we would think of as a pub today. Don't know if this helps any! Lynn

Thanks Lynn - that would make the most sense. It appears publican/miner combinations run in the family. I've just found out that as well as being a miner, his son John, was also licensee of the The Melbourne Arms, Gwynfryn circa 1909
