Hi I have recently seen a hand drawn map of Coedpoeth and Adwy'r Clawdd and spotted Glaspoles tennis courts. Does anyone know why they are called that. The reason I am asking is (from family memory) my Taid, Keith was born 1911 in Shrews while his mother was in service there. Apparently she failed to turn up for her chores one morning and when someone went to her room to check on her, they found that she had had a baby during the night. Nobody had realised she was pregnant. The mother (we dont know her name yet) was from Coedpoeth/Bersham area. My Taid changed his name in 1934 to Williams for 2 shillings. The year before he married my Nana Louisa. Williams was the name of his stepfather who had brought him up as his own. I thought that Glaspole was a very unusual name and looking through census records found only one entry for the area around 1891. By the time my Taid was born, this John E Glaspole would be 36. Is it all a coincidence? Any help would be appreciated

Hi Elaine, welcome to Minera Ancestry. this is all I can come up with so far. How old is the map you have seen. Glaspool Mrs, grocer, The Stores, Adwy-r-Clwydd This is on the directory pages 1932/36 on this site. Looks like the spelling could be wrong though I found Keith Glaspole married at Wrexham 1934 . is this your Taid. The birth certificate should identify the mother, it usually gives the place of birth as well. It could give the fathers name even if he was illegitimate. I found in the Births index 1911 mar qtr Keith Glasspoole registered at Atcham. This looks like your one. Could this be Keiths mother - its a marriage record on Free Bmd. Glasspoole Catherine = Williams. 1924 Wrexham 11b 462 GLASSPOLE Catherine Wrexham, Civil Marriage 1924 Wrexham County Borough (Wrexham) WM/096/20 MARRIED John E Williams. Seems like there are lot of spelling variations here which doesn`t help. As it`s a civil marriage you would need to get the certificate , and hope it shows who Catherines father was. Doesn`t explain the tennis courts though. Hope this helps.

Hi Anned
Thanks for the info. The Atcham record is the line iv'e been following and all the spelling doesn't help. We'd always believed that the name was Glaspole until Keiths death cert said Glasspoole. My dad Nev cant remember his grans name. He said he just called her Nain Pentre because she lived her married life in Pentre Broughton. She married a Thomas Williams from there.
I havn't come across the Mrs Glaspole though at the shop so I can now try to follow that line. The name is so unusual that I thought there must be some connection somewhere or was i trying to make there be a connection.
I'm doing ok so far on the Coedpoeth line (dads mums family) and have traced them back as far as an Ellin Rogers (Nant 1831) and another line to a Thomas Jones (Pattinsons Row, talwrn) who claims to have been born at Ffynnon farm? I am making another giant leap here and thinking it meant Ffynnon Nephal, Bwlchgwyn just because farm/nephal. We all know that the spelling or even pronunciation can be way off.
The map I have is just something I picked up at Wxm Museum yesterday for 25p (bargain!) its just a pictoral hand drawn map by a John Bagshaw without a date.
Another family story is that my dads mum louisa was in service in West Kirby and came home for her holiday, walked in the back kitchen door and found her dad (Thomas Owen Jones) dead and layed out on the kitchen table. News had not reached her before she set off home. He was killed in Plas Power Colliery in 1931 but we have no date.
I am still in the very early stages of this COMPULSIVE hobby and I have the family running around all over and speaking to people they've not seen for years just to get a snippet of info. I can also see in my future, many hours spent at the museum. I hope you're doing well in your quest.
Elaine

So- was it Thomas Williams that married Keiths mother ? These are on the same pages. Confusing.
Wrexham Civil Marriages 96 WILLIAMS JOHN E 20 1924-1926 Wrexham Civil Marriages 96 GLASSPOLE CATHERINE 20 1924-1926
Of course Glasspoole could have been Keiths fathers name. If I was you I`d get the birth certificate and work from there. It will save a lot of guesswork .
If you go to Wxm museum, there will probably be an inquest or report in the paper about the Plas Power accident. It won`t take long to search 1931.

I can solve the mystery of the Glaspole tennis courts. They were on the ground belonging to the stone bungalow on the main road fronting Poplar Close, the courts were to the rear of the now bungalow Vinreen. We bought the bungalow in 1987 from Mrs Elsie Glaspole, her husband died years before, but it was his father who owned the ground including Vinreen, and all Poplar Close, he built a little wooden bungalow first before he ever built the main one. As far as I was told they only had the 1 son (can't remember his name) and Glaspoles junior did not have any children, Elsie sold all the ground for building. Jason (llosgi) and his cousin built the double garages for us - small world. We sold it in 1997. Hope this solves the mystery. Chris

Hi Christine Thanks for that info. I guess I made a giant leap thinking there could be a connection. I have since ordered a birth certificate for my Taid. It solves some of the mystery but opens up a whole load more.
