I've two Hughes born in Minera in the 1820s and their father who must have carried on living in Minera [Gegin] because their daughter came back to have her son in Minera in 1853. Jonathan Hughes dob abt. 1821 and Jane Hughes dob abt.1825. The father's name was Edward Hughes, farmer on Jane's marriage cert. Has anyone any info. or ideas on this? Iris63, Bolton Lancs

Hello Iris and welcome to Minera Have a look at the Parish Records Online feature, you get to this from the home page, scroll down and there is a picture on a church, click that and away you go. In Minera burials, there are a few Hughes all from Gegin Wen. Jonathon aged 79 in 1864. Edward aged 80 in 1857 Jonathon aged 2 in 1858 Jane aged 78 in 1860 The baptisms have Jane Hughes 1822 d/o Edward and Jane. Farmer. Minera. You may find the baptism of Jane`s child. I`m sure you`ll find more names you know. I`ve just put the years, but the full date is given. Sceptrelady has early parish registers and I`m sure she will be able to help as well. Wern is worth checking as well, this is a non conformist church but lots of entries from the same area.

Thanks you for all your help. Today I've found Edward Hughes and his wife Jane farming at 'Old Gegin' entered between Cae Adar Farm and Gegin Ddu and Gegin Wen, on the 1851 census. I was previously told that Gegin Farm [called Gegin neuyth in 1845- sorrry about the spelling]was at the crossroads on the main Ruthin road, but this looks like it will be on the old road going over the top. Anyone any ideas? Iris63

I remember Gegin Farm as being at the crossroads on the 'new' Ruthin Road A525. It seems to have been for sale recently and the address is given as Ruthin Road. Put Gegin Farm Minera in to a search engine and you should get the sale details.

Yes Iris, 'Hen Gegin' is on the Old Road at the location you state. 'Gegin Newydd' being on the Ruthin Road. As stayed in JCD's pubs & inquests book, there have been a few 'Gegin' houses in Minera. Your Gegin aka 'Gegin Ddu' located above Pen y Palmant was in 1816 a pub called 'The Swan'. Gegin Newydd aka 'The Miners Arms'was built in 1834. In 1851 Gegin Ddu had been converted to five dwelling houses and a 55 acre farm and kept by your Edward Hughes.
