Where in Minera in early to mid 1800s, would gamekeepers have been employed? I guess that we would be looking for an estate of some size. Perhaps someone with local history knowledge could help me out here and give me some pointers for further research for my next visit to the record office. ;D

Hi Lynn I know Minera Mountain was an important grouse shooting area in the 19th century but as I had no idea who owned the land I put 'Minera Mountain Gamekeeper' into Google and got to an article about Ruabon Moors, which includes Minera Mountain. It says ' In the 19th century sporting interest took precedence. Gamekeepers employed by site owner Sir Watkin Williams Wynne managed the moor for grouseshooting.' As you probably know he was the owner of the Wynnstay Estate at Ruabon so that's another one that may be worth looking at. Ann

I knew that there were grouse on the moors now so that all makes sense, thankyou. Apparently the soil of Esclushum mountain was bought by W.W.Wynne and he also paid for shooting rights.

Lynn Part of Minera mountain, belonged to the Westminster Estates, ( above Park Farm) for grouse shooting. There was a rumour that the late Winston Churchill had spent time up there shooting as a guest of one of the Dukes of Westminster. Locsin
