Can anyone advise me what records I would be able to search through before 1837 for Births Deaths and Marriages in Coedpoeth. I have absolutely know idea of where to start and as I am from Lancashire the names of chapels etc., mean nothing to me at all.

Hi Netty
first of all do you know what denomination you ancestors were ? sometimes its a case of trial and error but we do have some records on the minera parish records site which you can access by clicking on the house (with a blue roof) under my name on the left hand side of this posting failing making any hits there, at the moment there arent many records available for non conformist registers but we are in the process of rectifying the situation
for everyone who is not aware, a lot of the old chapels closed when the congregations dwindled (they were sold off and transformed into ordinary houses ie converted chapels) and most of the time the records of marriages baptisms and deaths were destroyed or mislaid, very few went to archives for future reference as they were not obliged to do so as they were not part of the Church of Wales or church of England
There is an ongoing project to try and rectify this problem and we will update you all as soon as we have more information
Tracey
If you give us details of your ancestors we may be able to find out some information for you that you may not be aware of remember give as much as you can names addresses etc children parents names anything even how irrelevant it may seem to you at the moment

Is there any way that I can get any information to add to what I already know of my ancestors?
On 20th. February 1803 my ancestor, Evan Jones, was baptised at Ty Celyn Bach, Derwen. He was the son of William and Mary Jones.

It would seem that Clwyd FHS have transcriptions for Derwen available from the 1600's
without knowing the relatives denomination you can not always guarantee to find them in these booklets, as you may be looking at the wrong church or chapel its a bit of trial and error. some chapel records are available at the denbighshire records office

Thank you Tracey. I do not know what church it was but I do know it was at Ty Celyn Bach and I was hoping that there was only one church there.
Is it necessary to actually visit the record office as I tried phoning but they were not able to help.
Regards and sorry for the long delay but I have been trying all I know to get the information.

If it was this Derwen, near to Ruthin then there was only one church and two chapels. I would start with the church first and as Tracey has said Clwyd FHS do have transcripts for these. The link gives some info on Derwen. From where do you have the detail that he was baptised at Ty Celyn Bach, this sounds more like a name of a dwelling than a place name. www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/DEN/Derwen/index.html#ChurchHistory

Hello Ken As it happens I have the Derwen Parish Register transcriptions from the Clwd FHS. I can confirm the info you have for Evan Jones, baptised Feb 20, 1803 at the parish church in Derwen, parents William & Mary, abode Ty Celyn Bach. That's the good news. The bad news is that I checked for marriages & births in Derwen back to 1782 and births forward to 1812 with no result. I also checked the marriages for Clocaenog & Llanelidan but nothing appears there either. By the way, prior to 1837 all marriages had to be performed in church rather than a chapel. Have you searched the old maps website www.old-maps.co.uk/index.htm to find Ty Celyn Bach? The other option to try to go back further and locate the marriage would be to do a search of the Hayes/North Wales Marriage Index through the Genfair web site www.genfair.com/shop/system/index.htmlor in person at the Clwyd FHS at Cefn Mawr if you live locally. Sorry I can't be more help Heather

Hello Joey,
Thank you very much for the information. I was beginning to think that I had finally got to the end of the road. Yes it is Derwen near Ruthin and the information came from the Derwen Parish Register transcriptions by Clywd Family History Society but I cant get any further news.
My problem is that I live in Plymouth, Devon and spending any time in North Wales is difficult but of course I can and have searched the on-line information.
Sincere thanks, Ken Jones

Hello Heather,
Thanks for your reply but you make me feel guilty as I complain at being 250 miles from the family roots but you are in Canada.
You have been a great help and I will follow it up and let you know how I get on.
I think I will do the on-line searches first and then if I have to make another trip to the Wrexham area.
Again my sincere thanks and I can tell you that my father's sisters family (my cousins) are in Crystal Beach, Ontario
Thank you again, Ken Jones

Hi Ken Am happy to help. Just for fun I did a search on Ty Celyn Bach and came up with a link on the Denbighshire government site to Graig-Fechan. there is an area/street in that village called Ty Celyn. sure is a very pretty place - here is a link to a geograph picture: www.geograph.org.uk/photo/207879 Graigfechan is east of Llanfair Dyffryn Clwyd so I checked there as well as Efenechtyd PRs but still no marriage for William Jones & Mary. Sadly I do not speak Welsh but judging from the number of times "Ty" and "Celyn" came up on the search there may have been a lot of places in the area by that name. Another resource where you might get help is the Clwyd-List on rootsweb as there are many people on there with local knowledge of that specific area. I'm in Vancouver - about twice as far away as your cousins in Ontario!! Best of luck with your search Heather

Hello again Heather,
You are fantastic - thanks.
I have found a Ty Celyn Bach at Llanelian near Colwyn Bay LL29 on the B 5381 but it seems a long way (25 miles from Ruthin and further from Derwen) so I just dont know.
I will just keep trying thank you very much for your imput.
Sincere regards, Ken
