I am interested in some friends's family. Their Great Great Grandfather was Joseph Josiah HARVEY. He died in Minera in 1870 and was buried in the Minera churchyard though I have not found the grave yet.
His daughter Louisa HARVEY was schoolmistress at Minera from before 1864 until 1892.
I think Joseph HARVEY might have done some teaching around there but I have not been able to find out any more yet apart from him covering for his daughter in 1864 when she was ill. This seems to imply that he must have been teaching somewhere nearby.
He was schoolmaster in Llanferres in 1851 but I have not found him (or Louisa) in the 1861 census though his wife, Elizabeth Beckwith HARVEY, was still in Llanferres. He was in Llanfyllin before Llanferres.
He was shown as being a schoolmaster on his Death Certificate in 1870.
One of his sons, John HARVEY, was also a schoolmaster but appears to have been around Holywell - he was at Carmel School when he died in 1872 and probably in Holywell before then.
Elizabeth Beckwith HARVEY was also buried at Minera when she died in Wrexham in 1891.
Any information on any of this family would be very helpful.

I have looked at the parish registers for Minera and found the Entry for Joseph Harvey states that he was Buried on 20th April 1870 aged 68 and his address was Minera schools Further investigation shows that in the parish baptism registers the only other entries for the surname Harvey were for Anne, John and Sarah Williams Harvey Sarah Williams Harvey was baptised on 29th September 1874 her parents are shown as John Harvey (Mason) and Anne their abode is listed as Adwy Again in the parish registers the burial of Anne Harvey is listed on 2nd October 1874 aged 34 Sarah Williams Harvey is also listed as being buried on 1st January 1876 aged 15 months there are no other entries for any Harveys apart from the burial of Elizabeth Beckwith Harvey of Minera schools on 24th February 1891 aged 89 I hope this information is of some use to you

Thanks, I had the burial dates from the records office in Hawarden but I have not been able to find the grave yet.
I don't think the other Harvey family is connected but intriguingly John Harvey seems to have been born in Milford, Staffordshire (if he is the one age 25 in Bersham in 1871). Joseph Harvey was born in 1803 in Trentham, Staffordshire. I don't know anything about that period yet so there is always the possibility he was related but probably just coincidence.

Im sure I've seen a Harvey headstone in Minera churchyard. When I get chance, I'll nip in there for a look - (quite possible to email a pic of the headstone).

Well, I was correct about a spotting a Harvey headstone at St.Mary's churchyard.... ...But it was the stone of John Harvey, who Martin thinks is not a relation. I had a good scan around the churchyard in the area that contains graves of this paricular era, but I failed to spot Joseph Harvey. A number of graves however, are difficult to read...

Llanferres school: I don't suppose you came across any other names in your research which revealed the schoolmasters at Llanferres between the Harvey's (1851 & 61 census) and James Newton (1871 & 1881 census)? My grandmother, Martha Williams was born at the Schoolhouse in 1867 according to family records and I wondered if her father Adam Williams was there for a short time between the Harvey's and James Newton? The only relevant Adam Williams I can find is listed as a lead miner in the 1851 census and then that family seemed to decamp to Ruabon and Minera by 1861 census. Many thanks

I think I photocopied some pages from the school log book but it would be too early and it was the only the girl's school. The boy's school log book was not available because it is too fragile. Many thanks Martin for that suggestion and apologies for the delayed response - I have been out of action for a few weeks. The minutes of the school managers meetings are in the Ruthin Records office which will probably give me the answer I want - just need the time to visit. Barry

I have found the grave now.
The cross from the top of the base had either fallen off or been removed. It had been left leaning against the base, obscuring the text.
It is approximately half way between the window at the end of the church and the road.

Martin
I have just been doing some work on the parish records and have come across a baptism for a James Beckwith Harvey Fennah baptised 13/08/1888 and remembered this post, His father is named as John (Engine Fitter) and mother Louisa Elizabeth (im assuming nee Harvey) their address is given as Crewe but it is mentioned that James was born at Minera School House
They are showing on the 1891 England census at 11 Ruskin Road Coppenhall Monks, Crewe, Cheshire as follows
John Fennah Head Married 35 Engine Fitter Cheshire, Shotwich Louisa E Fennah Wife Married 25 N Wales Wrexham Gladys M Fennah Daur Single 4 Cheshire Chester
There is no mention of James on the census so there is a possibility that he died in infancy

Louisa Elizabeth FENNAH was the granddaughter of Joseph HARVEY, she was the daughter of his daughter Martha Elizabeth HARVEY (wife of Peter GORDON). Louisa and John married in 1886 so must have be staying with their Aunt Louisa HARVEY, schoolmistress in Minera. Joseph's wife was Elizabeth Beckwith DAVIES and is buried with him in Minera. Thanks again for the information.

He was buried on the 15th so looks as if he was baptised perhaps on the day he died. Martin
