I am hoping your historian may be able to shed some light on a birth certificate of an ancestor that was born in Minera in 1844. Her father was a "gamekeeper", and it states that she was born in the "Vicarage House". Is this an odd place for such a birth, or was this home more than just the vicar's residence? Can I assume that her father, James Wyatt, was employed on one of the grouse reserves in the area? Answers to either of these questions would be appreciated.

Would this be Mary Jane Wyatt, d/o James, gamekeeper and Hannah. Residence Minera. Bapt 2 March 1845 at Minera Parish Church. Details found on Parish Register Online , on this site. There are no more Wyatts there . The only reference to Vicarage Minera is this one also on this site, from directories on the Home page. SLATER's COMMERCIAL DIRECTORY 1868 Gentry and Clergy Jones Rev. Thomas Jeffrey, Vicarage, Minera Looking at the www.old-maps.co.uk/index.htm Old Maps site for Minera. there are two buildings , the Vicarage, and the Old Vicarage, both a distance of about half a mile from the Church.

Although a researching a different family, I too have gamekeepers from Minera. See my posting listed under the misc. section, heading Gamekeepers. You may find it of interest.

In 1851 James and Hannah Wyatt are living in Glossop, Apart from Mary Ann ( Jane) aged 7 there is Joseph aged 12, William aged 9, and Catherine aged 3 all born `Wales `.
WYATT William Wrexham Wrexham C.B. WM/004/15 1842 WYATT Mary Jane Wrexham Wrexham C.B.WM/005/81 1844 WYATT Catherine Wrexham Wrexham C.B.WM/007/81 1847
I can’t locate Joseph, and it looks like only Mary Jane was baptised in Minera Parish Church, though William could be registered in St Giles as Minera didn`t becaome a seperate parish till 1844. ( I think) Looking at Minera parish records on this site, in 1872 John Williams, a clerk in holy orders was living at Minera Vicarage, and in 1873 at The Vicarage, Minera. There was another Williams family living at the Old Vicarage, one was a joiner, another a labourer, and through the years different families lived there - so I would guess that James Wyatt was probably living at the Old Vicarage.

Thank you very much for the information. It was Mary Jane Wyatt that I was investigating. The Wyatts actually left two children behind with their grandmother in Glossop before travelling to Minera, so it appears that they never intended to stay permanently. Again, thank you for your time.
