Does anyone, please, have a family who came from Ireland to run a pub in Coedpoeth, probably between abt 1900 and 1906? My grandmother, Edith Williams was one of three domestic servants who came back with the family, although she wasn't necessarily employed by them at the time. If I could find the family, I could discover where and when Nain was working in Ireland ;D ;D
Ever the optimist! Hilary

Hmmmmmmm The directories are not much help, 1895 and 1913 are a bit off the mark, and don`t always give the names of the landlords. Pubs and Inquests had a bit more detail but whether it`s any use First one that stuck out was - Crown, Talwrn. In 1901 Eleanor Williams was fined for selling beer on a Sunday The licence was transferred to John Parry. Forget Eleanor, just found her in 1901 , landlady aged 62 born Llandegla Butchers Arms, Talwrn.1907 J Jones 1918 Mr Kelly Castle Inn, Coedpoeth1909 D Press. Queens Head, Coedpoeth1909 J Kelly

In 1901 there are 35 people living in Bersham parish born Ireland Of these , 21 are inmates in the Workhouse, none of these have any links to that trade, and of all the others there is only Julia M Soames who has any connection to the Brewery.

Thank you for your combined efforts!! You deserve a drink each. It looks like they arrived after 1901. By pure coincidence, though, there is a tenuous link with Soames as he is mentioned on the deeds of our old house when it was the Red Lion, long before it was a shop.
Cheers!

I don't really think that this is connected But you never know!! In 1901 William Roberts 24 was licensed Victualler at Gyffin,Conway at the Forresters Arms Charlotte Olive 27 wife born Conway Jane Olive 9months born Gyffin and one local girl living in. William was born at Minera and was a son of William Roberts and Harriet Jones who are the subject of another topic By 1911 they also have Hugh born 1903 Mountain Ash Harriet Amelia 5 born Chirk Florence 2 born Audley,Staffordshire They were in Crewe.William was a Commission agent then but I gather was mainly a publican, later in Manchester area. They seem to have moved around quite a bit! His brother John Henry Roberts, who was killed aged 32 in 1916 inWW1,married Jane Owens whose family kept a Minera pub I believe His parents were in Coedpoeth from about 1891 in Penygilli and in 1895 in the High Street according to the baptism records for Roland their youngest son on Salem Chapel records.William senior was a lead miner but maybe doing something else in 1895? William junior died fairly young and Charlotte in 1935 Sue
