Penygelli opened in 1868 . Mr Griffith T Jones was the master from Dec 1871. I have copied some of his entries from the logs books, they certainly make interesting reading.
I`ve had a very generous offer of help from another Minera member to print these Log Books as and when they are ready. Watch out J K Rowling ;D ;D ;D
I think I`d better explain what`s going on with these logs. They are not going to be `mass` produced for people to buy, in fact you won`t be able to buy one at all. There will be some copies printed, and these will go to Wrexham Archives, and Coedpoeth Library, and I think that it would nice for a set to go to Penygelli School . Without the help of the present headmaster I would not have been able to even get this started
I can send the files to other archives and they can then print them off for their own use. Bangor Library have copies of Wern, Salem and other Coedpoeth registers that I sent to them. Hope that made it all clear.

"Oct 10 The attendance this week and last has not been so good, great numbers are suffering from the Hoopng cough. Those in the First Class even are suffering severely especially Maurice Hugh Jones. His parents tell me that the blood scatters in every direction when he is coughing. I only hope that it won’t affect the examination." Poor Maurice Schools havent changed much then, now all we hear is "SATS"

Hi Annette, I am so pleased to hear someone has offered to help you with a possible book etc. in the future, I would be willing to proof read them for you or maybe the spelling mistakes (if any?) are deliberate and therefore would be best left in. You have helped so many people on this site and it would be nice if I could help you in a small way sometime. Regards Tom.

Spelling mistakes how adre you. ;D ;D ;D Seriously though, there were some obvious ones and I didn`t know whether to change them or not. Admitions and I expect there are some of my own doing. You can see that some sentences are very long with no punctuation, the grammar is very odd , but I suppose that`s how they spoke and wrote in those times. The grammar check went into overdrive .

I vote to keep the spelling mistakes I wonder who marked the spellings of the poor pupil teachers Its certainly not just the folk back then that didn't know punctuation.....

Absolutely fascinating!!! I am sure that my mother (Elizabeth Ellen Howard, nee Richards, 1906-1996) attended this school and I have a school photo of her aged about five years. As a teacher, I love the bit re. interference from outsiders!! If only they knew what was to come! Thank you for all your hard work....... put me on the book- order list please

www.scribd.com/doc/19177991/Bersham-and-Adwy-School-Log-and-Diary-Book-2 THESE LINKS ARE OUTDATED , SEE A LATER POST FOR UPDATES.Both the Boys school logs are now on the Scribd site. I shall delete all the other entries and you can see the full, if not finalised version by using the links.. Please feel free to give any opinions, layout, content etc, before they are finally finished. When pictures etc are added, then hopefully I can edit them, but that may be a while yet. Girls school logs are still being worked on. I have had quite a bit of help with this work , Eluned, Tom, Lynne Phennah, and others who have sent me photographs are to be thanked. Hope you are lucky enough to find some of your families.

Hello Annette - Thank you for all this. A truly fascinating read - and what an insight into both the social conditions of the time and also the difficulties of providing meaningful education in those years. With grateful thanks - Margaret.

The Logs are a delight to read. Funny in places, sad in others but they give an honest impression of the role of Headteacher and the schools place in society at that time. Fantastic to find the odd relative in there too Well done to everyone involved especially Annette for all her hard work. eluned

Aaw come on, you`re making me blush . It`s not quite finished yet though, they have been sent away to be illustrated and have little touches added here and there. I can`t wait to see this, it`s something I could never do myself. When it`s all finally done the whole lot will be replaced on Scribd . How long it will take I don`t know, it`s out of my hands now. Thanks to everyone else who has helped. Now what can we do next ;D ;D ;D

Just looking through this post and the links are gone, except for the school teacher lists. Are they still accessible online?

Why do things have to be changed, it seems Scribd have altered their layout and I can`t find a thing on the old site. Try this, it may work. Let me know. www.scribd.com/wilcoxon92/documents There is a copy of these in the Library at Coedpoeth, local history section, in a folder. I also took a copy to A N Palmer, last year while they were still at Bersham, so far they are not on the shelf, but may be available if you ask for them. I`m not happy about this, I did the work for all to see.
