My greatx2 grandfather Robert Jones moved from Llandegla in the 1840s to work in the Minera lead mines. Within ten years he and his wife Ann Rogers were running the village shop in Y Wern, opposite the Chapel and cemetery. Robert was a deacon of the chapel until his death in 1867. The shop was taken over by their son Philip Jones and his wife Mary Roberts, until c1897, when they moved their family to Liverpool. Philip was a joiner by trade, and the grocery side of the shop was probably run by the wives. Does anyone have any details concerning this family or the shop? I'd love to know more! PS the Mary Roberts mentioned above is one of the Ysbwty Ifan Roberts who are the subject of Susanjane's thread.

Hi and welcome to the site. You seem to know quite alot about the family already, so guessing you already have the family on census returns. Is there any information in particular you are after? Eluned

Thanks for your interest. Yes, I have the basic information from censuses and BMD and and some early Wern Chapel entries, although the later ones seem to have been lost . I was perhaps hoping for - some background about the Wern shop such as its location and type of goods. I believe that Philip Jones was the village coffin maker but it would be nice to have corroboration. - Information about the Jones wives. I think I've got Philip's wife Mary Roberts pretty well accounted for, but the wife of Robert jones from Llandegla was called Ann Rogers, a local girl baptised at Wern Chapel on 9/4/1815, daughter of Thomas Rogers, a collier, and Elizbeth Owens who married at Wrexham PC on 9/4/1814. - Information about Philip's siblings, eg Ann born 1845, Aaron born 1853 and Daniel born 1857. I know it's all a long time ago, but worth a try!

Hi , I`m not sure which years you are referring to as being lost, but there are Wern baptisms and burials on this site. The link is on the home page of this site, but I`ve put it here for you as well. www.the-red-zone.co.uk/about.html#

Thanks for this link to Minera parish records. The records I believe are lost are those of the Wern Chapel, baptisms and marriages, post 1821. I know some Wern residents used Minera Chapel, but not my Joneses. Robert Jones had been a Deacon of Wern Chapel for 15 years until his death in 1867, so his children born 1845 - 1856 will almost certainly have been baptised there.
The burial records of Wern Chapel do seem to have survived, but the graveyard itself is in a sorry state. Some years ago I tried to find out who, if anyone, owned it, but neither the Congrgational Church nor the local authority would take any responsibility. I was told it was probably vested in trustees, who failed to appoint successors when they died. Perhaps the registers are still in someone's loft!
PS Sorry for the delay in replying.

I've now found the records, as you said. I feel like a right Charlie, but the site is so slow to load and I was too impatient. All Robert Jones' children are there. Many thanks.
