I have recently started to do my wife's family tree and would welcome any assistance on a Sarah Ann Oldfield born 1876 in Minera, Denbighshire.
Details that I have are :-
1881 Census -- Grand Daughter living with Harriet Thomas at 2, Wern Chapel House 1891 Census -- Niece living with Edward Thomas at New Brighton 1901 Census -- Servant living in Bolton
In 1899 she had a son, Albert Edward Oldfield (have certificate) who is not on the 1901 or 1911 census. Family folklore infers that he was sent to live with other family members elsewhere. He did maintain his original birth name as he re-appears in army records at a later date.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, lets see if we can help 1881 RG11; Piece: 5518; Folio: 92; Page: 15 Harriet Thomas 56 b Llanarmon. Edward Thomas 26 son. David Thomas 24 Griffith Thomas 18 John Thomas 15 Sarah A. Oldfield 5 grand daughter Sep qtr 1876 Sarah Ann Oldield birth. Mar qtr 1876 John Oldfield married either Mary Thomas / Jane Williams at Wrexham, St Giles C45/08/196 Could be, but she would only be about 16. You would be able to check the couples ages, and parents names in the parish registers as the marriage took place in the church. Or you could just order the birth certificate. 1871 Class: RG10; Piece: 5657; Folio: 11; Page: 14 David Thomas 48 lead miner b Mold Harriet Thomas 45 b Llanarmon Robert Thomas 18 Edward Thomas 16 David Thomas 14 Mary Thomas 10 Griffith Thomas 7 John Thomas 4 HAYES Marriage Index, this seems to confirm that it is Mary from 1871.. 1876. JOHN Olfdield s/o JONAH Oldfield. MARY Thomas d/o DAVID Thomas

I`m struggling to find a likely John Oldfield , perhaps the mariage cert will give more clues. Here is Mary in 1861 2 Wern Row, Esclusham Above. Class: RG9; Piece: 4285; Folio: 71; Page: 7; David Thomas 40 leadminer b Flints. Harriet 34 b Llanarmon. Robert 8 b Wrexham Edward 6 "" David 4 " " Mary 10 mths " As a matter of interest take a look at this record. There are people from all over the country, including a child born in France. Nant was truly a `cosmopolitan` place. 1851 HO107; Piece: 2503; Folio: 683; Page: 10; Living in the `Nant.` David Thomas 30 b Mold Flints Harriet Thomas 26 b Llanarmon Possible marriage St Giles Wrexham 1851 March qtr. Easy to check PRs. David Thomas to either DAVIES Jane SMITH Harriet Looks like you will need the marriage to see who Harriets father is. 1841 HO107; Piece 1410; Folio: 7; Page: 7; This might be Harriet but she`s not with any other Smiths. Living in Nerquis. Looks like Friegeland Thomas Blackshaw, 20 MS Y born in county ( Flints) Harriet Smith 15 FS N.

One possibility for John Oldfield is on the 1861 Census - son of Jonah amd Jane Oldfield living at Brynhelig , Minera, he was born Llanarmon 1853 and there were several step brothers and sisters with the surname Roberts. He appears again in 1871 again at Minera, living with his brother Robert Oldfield , Robert's wife and son and another brother Thomas. Regards - Margaret.

The John Oldfield I am looking for is the one in the 1861 and 1871 census as described in prior post. However, I cannot find him and his wife Mary in the 1881-1901 census but he then reappears in the 1911 census. In 1911 he is described as a brother living with Ruth Newns in Farnworth, Lancashire. I assume the sister is Ruth Oldfield (born c. 1848) who was living at the same location as John in the 1861 census. Can trace Ruth Newns and he husband back to 1871 then struggle to find her marriage. Only marriage I can find for a Samuel Newns is to a Ruth Woodfine in Dec qtr 1869 in Wrexham. This may suggest that Ruth was not a full sister of John. I intend to get the birth certificate of John Oldfield to check out mother and father.

I had some time to spare and found some Records at the Wrexham Museum. All St Giles Wrexham Marriages. 10th March 1841, page 214. David Thomas full age. Ba, labourer, of Minera, father David Thomas, miner. Harriet Smith full age, Sp, servant, of Minera, father Robert Smith, miner. Witts . Joseph Jones signed, Anne Evans mark X. =================================== 29th Dec 1869, page 130 Samuel Newns full age Ba, labourer of Southsea. Father John Newns labourer. Ruth Woodine full age Sp, of Southsea, father John Woodfine Witts. Thomas Oldfield , Elizabeth Davies , both marked X. =================================== 20th March 1876 page 196 John Oldfield full age Ba , miner of Minera, father Jonah Oldfield Miner. Mary Thomas full age Sp , of Minera, father David Thomas. Mary signed her name, John made his mark X. Witts. Thomas Oldfield mark X, Jane Jones, signed her name. So there was a link with either Samuel Newns or Ruth Woodfine and the Oldfields. Hope this helps.

I have come to this a bit late. You will see by looking at the pro board link mentioned above that my great great grandmother Jane Roberts was with Jonah Oldfield in the 1861 census. They don't appear to have married but had Jonathan Oldfield before Jonah's death in 1864. If you look at photos in my " William Roberts and Harriet Jones" thread you will find photos that might relate to your Oldfields. I have other photos from an album that I cannot put names to.Very happy to compare them with anyone elses family photos. Sue
