Hi all, I am trying to find out more detail about Esther Hayes born 1843 in Broughton Denbighshire who married my great grandfather John Wynne. I have been searching for their marriage to no avail for months but this is what I do know so far. Esther Hayes born Broughton Denbighshire is found on the 1851 census living with her maternal grandfather Edward Pugh at the Miners Arms Minera - no parents living with her. 1861 census missing for this area and she is nowhere to be found living elsewhere. Esther Wynn age 28 b denbighshire 1871 England census husband John , daughters Mary Ellen 7 and Alice 3 living in Warrington. Esther died 1878 in Coedpoeth (Penygelli) of Phythisis aged 36 - she was buried in Wern Cemetery with her daughter Mary Ellen but on the Wern notes on Minera website her age is 49! I cannot find an Esther Hayes birth certificate for around 1843 in Wrexham either. I found the marriage of Esther Pugh to Edward Hayes December 1842 in Wrexham St Giles. I have found a death for an Esther Hayes in Wrexham Jun 1843 possibly her mother who may have died in childbirth? This lady is the recently found John Gwynne's (Wynne) mother - all help or suggestions gratefully received Many thanks, Alison

Hi Alison, Although registration came in in 1837, it was not made compulsory until 1875 so she probably wasn't registered at all. Is there any chance she could have been married prior to "being with" John Wynne? That may explain why there doesn't appear to be a marriage Have you searched for her baptism? her father's will? Tricky one is this Eluned

Hi Lynn, I plan to checkout the records at A N Palmer next week but just thought I'd see if anyone had any ideas to be honest. I checked the wills website at Aberystwyth for Edward Pugh (grandfather) as he was a publican but nothing found so far. Its so frustrating also that both Wynne and Hayes have so many ways of spelling them. I have even thought that Esther Hayes was in fact Esther Hayes nee Pugh and that she married John Wynne after Edward Hayes ( based on the Wern cemetery age discrepancy) and that she was older than he thought? A very mysterious family!

Have you noticed that there is a lodger next door to the Minera Arms in 1851? Edward Hayes, widower, age 50, Lodger, pob N.K. coincidence?

Hi, I must admit I had not spotted that one! Possibly her father but quite a bit older than I expected - no age on the marriage entry so I'll get the marriage certificate to check out his age on that. I have assumed that Esthers Mother died soon after her birth and am awaiting a death certificate to confirm/refute that also. Many thanks, Alison
