Yes it can - it`s called a `husband and wife tree` and is caused by inosculation. this is a natural phenomenon in which trunks or branches of two trees grow together.It`s a form of grafting. The branches first grow separately close to each other until they touch. When the bark on the touching surfaces comes away due to movement of the trees by wind, they self graft and grow together. this can be seen on the left heading towards the weir on mill terrace road,there was another just above looks like the council have removed it when erecting new fence,have a look when you are out on a week end walk. Attachments:
