Hi Jonsey, Thanks for the information which in itself I found very interesting. I did not manage to connect your family to my wifes ancestors so I must accept the fact that the shop was probably sold and I have been told it thrived as the new owners obtained fresh produce and meat, bacon and ham etc. from Bryneglwys when other shops were struggling to get supplies. Can I just say thanks once again. Kind Regards Tom.

Hi, This soldier has always puzzled me as regards his parents etc. as my wife has family connections with the last people to inhabit and run Helyg shop. I have now traced Robert on the various cenuses but cannot link him to the people related to my wife. Maybe the two groups are not related but I will put as much info as I can on here and maybe we can solve my dilemma. Firstly Gunner Robert Hughes 150915 Helyg Shop, 45 High St. Coedpoeth, aged 28 years, died 20 9 1917---is what appears on Coedpoeth War Memorial. The 1911 census shows 45 High St Coedpoeth----Annie Elizabeth Hughes head Single aged 46 yrs. Shopkeeper/Grocer.--- Robert Hughes nephew Single 22 yrs. Assistant Grocer---Robert Morris Jones Single 15 yrs. Apprentice Grocer---Jennie Evans single aged 20 yrs. General Servant. Please be aware there is a Helyg House and Helyg Shop on High St Coedpoeth---The shop has accommodation and is sometimes referred to as 45 High St. but attached to the shop is Helyg House. 1911 Census also shows Helyg House Coedpoeth-----Robert Hughes m(about 8 yrs.) aged 52 yrs. Butcher----Sinah Hughes m aged 57 and Edith Williams s 15 yrs. family Servant. Found a marr. 2nd Q 1903 Wrexham Civil. I will put some more cens. in which should help you see this Robert and Annie Elizabeth Hughes are brother and sister. 1881 Census Ty Helig, Bryneglwys Evan Hughes 54 yrs. wdr. farmer 140 acres b. Hi Pierce, You are absolutely correct regarding Richard George Griffiths being a brother to William Henry---He was badly wounded but do not know where or when and he died from his wounds 10 9 1922 and is buried in Llanfynydd churchyard with his mother and father. I believe the family had to fight hard to get his name on the Ffrith Memorial. I would welcome any info regarding his service etc if you are ever able to find anything Thanks again Tom

Hi Ago, Appreciate your attempt to help me but as you said they do not tally and my William Henry was only born in 1898 I did not pursue this query as he has relatives closer to him than me still alive and you will realise it can be a touchy subject. Nevertheless thankyou and my apologies to Pierce for not replying to his post Cheers Tom

Hi, I have been at several talks over the years when the subject of Mr & Mrs Purslow has been mentioned. Apparently they spread the word that any troops from the Wrexham area would be welcome to visit their home while serving King and country in the Middle East.. Lots of local men mostly from Coedpoeth took them up on their generous offer and were entertained to fabulous meals. They also gave the troops food to take back to barracks etc. so there were a lot of parents in Coedpoeth very grateful to the Purslows for their generosity There must be lots of locals who know far more than me about all this so this may prompt them to enlighten us all- Tom This shop was on High St Coedpoeth South side of Church Road and first building--now a house!

Hi, I got the details from the burial details for Wern chapel. I have not got many pics of headstones in Wern as it is all overgrown and somewhat dangerous to say the least. However on Tom Mercers site he lists a Jane Jones as being a M/I in the Wern graveyard on her own which in my book makes this a strong possibility. Tom Mercer is quite an expert recording local M/Is but you have to get in touch with him yourself as he only displays the barest details on his website.-Hope this helps---Tom

Hi, I have found at least three references to Keepers Cottage in the late Clifford Davies's books and booklets--as they are all very similar, I will just put one on here from the Booklet named MINERA, BWLCHGWYN & COEDPOETH-----"KEEPERS COTTAGE. South Minera." " The Lodge at South Minera was actually in the parish of Esclusham Above. It was the home of one of the gamekeepers for Sir Watkin Williams Wynne. It stands on the highest part of the mountain road after climbing the hill from Pool Park or the Sychnant. The ruin of the keepers cottage which is on the left side of the road as descending the hill to Gwter Siani. The Johnson family lived there until the bombs began falling in 1940. The two children, Jimmy and Pam used to walk the two miles each way from there to Minera School each day. All that remains now, after sixty years or more, is the rhodedendron bush that grew in the garden. The military used the mountain for training purposes during the war and it was the American soldiers who used the house for target practice and who finally destroyed it. Some bullet holes can still be seen in the stone rubble that remains." I would just like to add that all of us youngsters at the time were always told that the keepers cottage had received a "Direct Hit" by a german bomb, but I am sure Cliff would have had more knowledge than me regarding this matter. ---Tom

Hi, I remember Jimmy Johnson living on Minera Mountain in The Gamekeepers cottage in the early forties and he had a sister Pam who went to Minera school--she was born about 1934 ish. He visited Minera about 30 years ago approx.? and called in my mothers house. He asked her about all sorts of people he had known in Minera during his early life. He did not leave an address as far as I knew and sadly my mother passed away sometime ago so I cannot enlarge on what I have said. The only remaining landmark for the cottage is a Rhodedendron bush and some old bits of ruins such as stone foundations. They are alongside the left hand side of the road which goes from New Brighton(Minera) to Worlds End and then Llangollen---about 2 miles from Minera end. Regards Tom
